Formatting Styles

Not sure if this is the right place...My son has messed up my Microsoft Word
somehow, and I have tried everything I know to correct it. It comes up by
default showing the paragraph symbol and other punctuation marks. If I
unclick the Paragraph button on the tool bar all of the typing disappears.
If he tries to print, it only prints blank pages. I spent a whole night
awhile back and thought I had gotten the styles/formats back to normal, but
it has somehow reverted back. Even when I could change things, I still
couldn't get the blinking cursor to appear. Is there anything I can try
short of uninstalling Office and reinstalling???

Sounds like he accidentally formatted the text in your Normal doc as Hidden,
the ¶ on the toolbar controls the paragraph symbol, etc, and also Hidden
text. You can change Tools | Options, Print to print Hidden Text, that may
have been your temporary fix.

However, to fix it entirely, this page will let you get your new blank
documents back to normal.

Actually, you probably don't need to use
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm. Just go to Format
| Font, remove the check from the Hidden box, and click the Default...
button.

Dear friends

I need additional help - Somehow my default word document settings are corrupted. I followed Suzanne Barnhill's recommendation to restart Word in order to get the Normal.dot file reset, however, I still have some problems. Most notably, the default Bullets and Numbering dialog box shows some wierd bullets - I see a clover and a Greek theta, and a Greek lowercase omega and some other characters instead of nice round or square bullets.

The problem isn't that I couldn't just save a new Normal Template for my personal use, but that documents that I receive from others have their bullet styles reset. For example, in a document that I know prints correctly (with round bullets) shows up on my screen with clover-bullets. Yikes

Your help is much appreciated

Start Word with the default blank document (Document1). Go to Format |
Bullets and Numbering and select each pane in turn. Click Reset for each
pane for which it is enabled. Do this on all three tabs of the dialog, then
OK out. All the bullets and numbering will be reset to their defaults; these
settings are stored in the Windows Registry. Any styles that have custom
bullets/numbering associated with them will be unaffected, but when you use
them, they tend to clutter up the List Gallery, so a periodic clear-out is
useful.

Dear Suzanne, and Friends,

Thanks for the information about resetting my bullet styles; I have
done so. Unfortunately, it appears that the default style is in
"symbol" font, and the bullet options are "none, solid bullet, open
bullet, clover, theta, lowercase-omega, horizontal squiggle, vertical
squiggle". Perhaps I need to reset my windows registry file? What do
I look for on a Mac (OS10.2)?

thanks,
grace

Make sure you have the Wingdings font installed. It sounds as if Word is
pulling the characters from Symbol instead.

You're on a Mac?

You do know you don't have a windows registry file, in that case? :)

Just to clarify--you have already found Normal, renamed it, and let Word
create a new one? And in the new documents based on this fresh clean
Normal, you still get weird bullets?

You can also try renaming your prefs file
go to ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/ folder (the one in your user account)
and delete the Word Settings .plist file.

If that doesn't work, you can rename and copy the prefs file back. Then, in
the same location try deleting the Word Font cache and the Carbon
Registration Database. Word will automatically recreate them when you
restart.

If that still doesn't work, follow this link for some Word X troubleshooting
techniques:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/WordMac/index.htm

If none of those works, note that reinstalling never helps unless you remove
first. But before you remove and reinstall, repost to a Mac-specific group
where there are more people skilled at troubleshooting Mac problems.

microsoft.public.mac.office.word

You can access these through the MS site, via Google Groups, or by setting
up a newsreader.
For Mac groups on the MS site, see here (note URL broken by text wrapping)

Newsreaders are usually most efficient--here's a link on how to configure a
newsreader (e.g. Entourage or Outlook Express, note that URL is broken by

Here's a link on how to spamproof your address to protect it if using
Entourage:

FYI,
microsoft.public.mac.office
microsoft.public.mac.office.excel
microsoft.public.mac.office.powerpoint
microsoft.public.mac.office.entourage
Also exist.
