Footnotes and section breaks

I am using Microsoft Office 2003 for students. I have searched all possible
areas of Microsoft site as well as internet seach to no avail. I am
re-typing a document for a research project. It is vital that my footnotes
change numberical order on the same page but different sections. For
example, the first few sentences have footnotes that are ordered 1-4.
However, the footnote for sentence 5 must be footnote number 50. Then,
sentence 10 must be footnote 51, etc. I tried inserting all possible forms
of sections after the fourth sentence, but to not avail. If I cannot insert
a section on the same page, I fear I'm doomed. Any help would be appreciated.

Where are these numbers coming from? Why the odd numbering? I could see it
if they were references to a numbered reference list (which would be handled
differently), but I don't think you're going to be able to do this with
ordinary footnotes.

Oh, because he/she's retyping an existing document (why? That's what
computers are designed to avoid.)

Bjnelissen, is there a list of works cited at the end that the numbers
correspond to?

Hi Suzanne and Daiya and thank you for your response,

Part of this project is that I must retype certain documents (the original
disk from a few years ago was lost). In order to prevent plagarism, I must
duplicate certain articles. Part of the problem is I believe the original
file was saved in word perfect, which of course does footnotes differently,
i.e. you can change the order midstream and on the same page. I tried
inserting a section break (in the office doc file), but from the info. I have
found thru microsoft, with footnotes, when you insert a section break it
handles it like a page break.
I scanned the original document and thought of just converting it to word
perfect and doing the project in word perfect; however, believe it or not I
have a new and updated office 2003 and also downloaded the converter
pack...it doesn't even give me the option to save a file as word perfect
6x...I'm at my wits end and can honestly say that after years of being a
devoted microsoft user (back in the day when that was not a very popular
thing) and paying thousands of dollars to ensure I have the latest software,
I cannot believe that something as mundane as being able to change footnotes
midstream cannot work. Changing footnotes midstream is not an uncommon
occurrence for students and academics. I certainly hope that one day
microsoft addresses this issue.

Replying to two people in the same message is perfectly fine and more
efficient. Except you missed one of my questions, which I've repeated down
below.

Yes. MS actually claimed they had added the feature of restarting notes per
section with Word 2002, but it doesn't work. The main need for this,
however, comes from having chapters with section breaks for landscape
tables, etc, not to jump from note 4 to note 50 in the same page.

Can WordPerfect just open it? I thought WP had better ability to open/save
as Word than vice versa.

Changing footnotes midstream is not an uncommon
occurrence for students and academics.

Actually, the way you are doing it, I think it is pretty unusual, especially
if these are really *foot*notes and not endnotes. Is there really a style
where footnote numbers go out of order? That seems totally unusable to me.
Endnote numbers sometimes change midstream and jump all over the place, but
in that case, you don't use the endnote feature.

Now, if you had a list of notes at the *end* that was numbered, and you need
to make the reference numbers in the text correspond to that list, we can
tell you how to do that in Word.
