Footer text is being removed in 2007 theme for PowerPoint

I saved a custom theme in PowerPoint 2007 that includes text in the footer on
the slide master. In addition to the footer placeholder, the slide master
includes the page number placeholder. When I open up the theme file (.thmx),
the footer text appears on the slides as I intended. However, when I apply
the theme to a new blank presentation or an existing presentation, the footer
text is eliminated; the footer placeholder appears but does not contain any
text. The page number placeholder, however, appears as intended. I have tried
removing the footer placeholder and then adding it back again, but this
didn't solve anything. Does anyone know of a way to fix this--if not, can
someone explain why this is happening? Any help and insights will be
appreciated.

You may need to turn on the footer in the presentation. If you apply the
theme then go to Insert | Header and Footer and tick the footer box, does
the text then show up?

My apologies--I did not mention that this was part of my original
troubleshooting. In order to see the footer placeholder in the presentation
after applying the custom theme, I turned it on using the same process
outlined below, but the custom footer text that was part of the presentation
when I saved it as a custom theme did not appear. It seems like the footer
text isn't being saved to the custom theme. . .which really decreases the
usefulness of using custom themes in PowerPoint (especially since I'm trying
to make this idiot proof for distribution to all the PP users at my company).
Any other ideas?

Ah, I see. I can repro this.

I believe you'll need to save the file as a template for your users in order
to get the footer info. I'll report this as a bug. Seems to me that if slide
masters and layouts travel with a theme, you'd expect the header/footer info
too as well.
