font viewer error

K

krackedpress

After a complete crash and complete reformat and reinstall

double clicking on a TTF font had no viewer
I made sure that the TTF files pointed to the Windows Font Viewer in
System32 folder

Now ALL of the TTF fonts are not valid fonts - including the Windows
Installed Fonts BUT all of the OTF fonts and Type1 fonts are OK

Since I know those fonts are valid since they are good and working.

Even after a OS Repair install - still not working

Anyone can help me
Since I need to view and new fonts I downloaded
I need to use the fontviewer program file

If you right click a .ttf file are Open and Print the first two choices?

The problem is the fact that when I OPEN the TTF file

the program gives me the following error

"The requested file........ is not a valid font file"

The Font Viewer program is the problem or how it is used

The program works correctly for Type1 and Open Type
but it will not work with True Type.

That is the trouble. I cannot view/open a TTF font file anymore.

Maybe the .ttf file association is messed up. Try this.

Open a command prompt...
Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK |
Type the following line and hit your Enter key:

assoc.ttf=ttffile

Close the command prompt.

The command: assoc.ttf=ttffile should have returned: .ttf=ttffile

-------------------
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\>assoc.ttf=ttffile
..ttf=ttffile

What happens when you type: assoc /? in a command prompt?

What happens when you type or paste the following command in Start | Run?

fontview arial.ttf

Try running the System File Checker. System File Checker (sfc.exe) replaces
screwed up system files.

Load your XP CD in your CD drive.

Start | Run | Type or paste: sfc /scannow | Click OK

If you have XP Home and it asks for your XP Pro CD, see this KB article...

You may be prompted to insert a Windows XP Professional CD when you run the
System File Checker tool in Windows XP Home Edition
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;897128

If SFC.EXE did anything it will be in the Event Viewer.

Open the Event Viewer...
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | Click OK |
Click System | Look at any Windows File Protection
entries

Explains a whole bunch about sfc.exe.
scannow sfc (sfc.exe)

All five of these keys should have the same (Default) setting.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\fonfile\shell\open\command
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\otffile\shell\open\command
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\pfmfile\shell\open\command
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\ttcfile\shell\open\command
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\ttffile\shell\open\command

Value Name: (Default)
Data Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
Value Data: %SystemRoot%\System32\fontview.exe %1

fontview arial.ttf

Above
This worked fine

below did nothing to help
still need to get the double click to work

All five of these keys should have the same (Default) setting.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\fonfile\shell\open\command
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\otffile\shell\open\command
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\pfmfile\shell\open\command
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\ttcfile\shell\open\command
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\ttffile\shell\open\command

Value Name: (Default)
Data Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
Value Data: %SystemRoot%\System32\fontview.exe %1

I cannot get the Data Type to change ( REG_SZ )
but the Value was wrong and I changed it

It is now back to the file .............. is not a valid font file

That is the trouble

ALL TTF fonts are now "not a valid font file"
when double clicked
but will display when run "fontview arial.ttf"

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\ttffile\shell\open\command

Value Data: %SystemRoot%\System32\fontview.exe %1

OK I got the REG_SZ to change to REG_EXPAND_SZ
and rebooted

STILL
the double click states not valid font file
when run fontview arial.ttf displays it.

I think it has to do with something else

OK, try this.

Open Folder Options...
Start | Run | Type: control folders | Click OK |
File Types tab | Scroll down to and click on TTF |
If you see a Restore button, click on it

The Restore button resets the selected extension to the previous file type
and will only be present if you modified the settings of the selected file
type. The Restore button appears in the place of the Advanced button.
