Try this: From My Computer or Windows Explorer, with your
view set the way you want it, click on Tools > Folder
Options. Choose the View tab. Click on Apply to All
Folders. Click OK.

Does that do it for you?

Xp by default will only remember the settings of 400
folders I assume that system folders are included in this
number.
To change this to 8,000 folders download the registry
edit from that fabulous person Kelly.

The other replies solve your problem but I would like to point out that keeping files and programs on your desktop is a bad practice. Files can become huge. Sometimes MB or even GB in size. At startup all of them and their contents have to be loaded if you keep them on your desktop. This results in a slow boot up time. Accessing them is also slow as the OS has to constantly go to your desktop to get what it needs. Desktops should only have shortcuts on them. Shortcuts to files and folders as well as programs will in most cases only by 50 or so Kb in size. To create shortcuts for your files you simply right click on the file and then click create shortcut and the system will place it in the folder where the file is and you can drag and drop it to your desktop or in the case of some programs XP will tell you that it can't create a shortcut here would you like to place one on your desktop and you click yes. Have fun. {:~)
