If I understand the instructions for fixing the error in defender, you must
uninstall WD as the first step. How do you do this? I cannot find anything
that will allow you to uninstall any Windows components in Vista. Thanks.

I had this same issue. In fact if you notice the windows update is not
working either. If you check your windowsUpdate.log you might see this error
message "Failure Software Synchronization Client has an invalid Pid." I had
to pay $59 to microsoft and have them give me a new activation code.

I had the same problem and followed the directions from a post on the
Microsoft newsgroup that Lone Wolf suggested. While unorthodox to say
the least, it fixed the problem and I was once again able to download
updates (including Defender and the Extra's for Windows Vista
Ultimate) that I had been missing. The fix was just a batch file
that re-registered DLLs - hopefully Microsoft will put out an official
fix ASAP considering this is a serious flaw and people shouldn't have
to spend $59.00 to help them iron out their buggy first release.
