Help Required!

I acquired a new computer a couple of months ago complete with
Vista.........and it's been a complete headache ever since! Nothing is
compatible with it, I receive driver errors all the time and now to top it
all off I appear to be unable to receive Windows Defender Updates! I've
tried running it several times but receive the same error every time:
0x80240029. Can anyone help me?

In the time I was waiting for a response, I did a little more digging and
appear to have discovered the solution! For anyone else experiencing this
error, you need to do the following:

- Restart the computer.
- Press F12 as computer is restarting to enter the Boot Menu.
- Press F4 to exit the Pop Up Menu.
- Press F8 to access the Advanced Boot Options Menu.
- Select Safe Mode and then Enter.
- Once computer loads up, click Start and type %windir% into the Start
Search box and then press Enter.
- Locate the SoftwareDistribution folder.
- Right click and select Rename.
- Type in Software.Distribution.old and Enter.
- Restart the computer, and run Definition Updates in Windows Defender.

It worked for me :)

Brads,

Thanks so much; this worked for me also running Vista HP on a new PC. I had
started to see odd browser behavior, too. Now, why is this error not listed
by Microsoft?

I have the exact same problem and error number. I've tried all the mentionned
solutions, but when I press F4 to exit the pop up menu, nothing happens.
Pressing F8 at startup does nothing either, nor does it do anything when I've
entered setup and then gone to boot menu. Do I need to be in safe mode to do
this? Is there any other way?? HELP!
