I have Vista Home Premium installed and activated and I have been
getting this red shield in my task tray telling me the Windows
Defender definitions are out of date. I have ignored this for a few
day thinking that sooner or later it will update all by itself. After
a few days I got tired of waiting a opened it up and clicked on UPDATE
NOW. It looks like it starts to download then it quits saying it
cannot update.

I opened the Windows Defender and tried to get it to update and this
time I got back an error code 0x80240029. Help!

Before someone tells me that my version expired and I need to download
a newer version, I tried that. It downloads and then tells me it
comes included with Vista Home Premium and to go to Control Panel -
Security... which gives the error code!

Start up in safe mode, click 'Start'and in the searchbox type %windir%
and hit enter. Find the SoftwareDistribution folder, rightclick on it
and choose 'rename'. Name the folder SoftwareDistribution.old and
restart in normal mode.

Note: your solution obviously works, and there is ANOTHER solution as posted
by the previous person. HOWEVER, the bigger point is: WHY does this error
code exist in the first place!! I have it too, on a new Vista system. I
shouldn't have to perform "workarounds" to have things work properly.
Actually, I'm not certain that the Defender error code won't show up again
the NEXT time it needs updating -- so maybe these "workarounds" will be a
weekly thing.
OK....... thanks for listening! I feel better.

I, also got this error message today on Vista Ultimate x64, today. One
person here coming up with this error in a day, I can understand. Two,
and I am getting suspicious. Three, and I have to ask what MS changed
at their end to screw things up.

This is much more serious than just not permitting Windows Defender to
update its definitions. When the problem occurs, Windows Update can't
find any updates...including security-based updates. I just checked the
log and found that it found no updates, including the one that has been
available since 4/27/07.

After following the procedure outline in the KB article, not only did
Windows Defender update its definitions, but Windows Update miraculously
found the cumulative update for the 64 bit Media Center which had been
available for 5 days. I checked the log before and it found no updates
for the past 5 days. In fact it found no updates in the latter half of
April. :-(

I think the term Microsoft Security is an oxymoron.

Thanks that did the trick! Of course it does not explain what
corrupted the SoftwareDistribution folder so that you can stop it from
happening again.

A few days ago a friend that bought the Onecare subscription also ran
into the same problem but after calling them she was told they had no
record of her purchase. After providing them the order number her
problem seems to have resolved itself. Money speaks :)

This is not really "workarounds", it is an fix.
When the data in the folder gets corrupted, renaming/deleting forces
Windows to recreate a new folder with valid data.

This is also a valid fix for some Windows Update issues.

Lonestar, it's _exactly_ the same solution... ;-)

A real fix would be that it is *fixed* so this "fix"
isn't necessary.

So let me see if I understand this. The software responsible for
downloading critical updates detects something is wrong and does nothing
more than log that 0 updates were found and reference an invalid pid.
It does nothing to alert the user to the problem or correct it, thus
leaving the system potentially vulnerable.

I'm not even going to wonder why there is a dependence on files that are
so easily corrupted.

That should be a lesson to you. You shouldn't ignore Big Brother when he
knocks on your door. You do so at your peril.

Money is the only thing that Microsoft understands. What a greedy bunch.

help please! i can not restart in safe mode! if i press and hold f8 the comp
just beeps and then proceed to opening windows in normal mode. could i do
this using normal mode?

Instead of pressing and holding the F8 key, try just tapping the key. Start
tapping the key immediately after pressing the power button and keep tapping
until the boot menu screen appears.

If this does not work, start Vista normally and go to Start and type
msconfig. In the results, click Msconfig.exe. Go to the Boot Tab and in the
boot options section, place a check mark in Safe Boot.

The next time you restart the computer, it will automatically start in Safe
Mode. Before exiting Safe Mode go back and repeat these steps, but remove
the check mark from the Safe Boot option.
