first boot agent

I'm encountering an XPE boot problem which I hope someone can explain. On
boot-up, the first prompt I get is to select the OS (XP or XPE). After
selecting/getting the XPE logo, the message 'first boot agent is starting' is
shown, followed by 'FBA installing components' . Shortly after this, the boot
process returns to the 'select OS' prompt (and continues in this endless
loop). Has anyone run into this before or know what's missing from my image
in order for the boot process to continue?

I'm using a second hard drive for the XPE image. I checked the boot.ini file
and it contains two entries for default (XP) and XPE. I also verified the TD
settings and they all reference the new drive letter and the boot ARC path
points to the new drive (I think) ....multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1).
The letter assigned to the new drive (in Disk Manager) matches the entries in
the TD settings window. Is there something else that I've missed?

If this is the boot.ini on the boot partition, then the ARC path looks to be
correct. I wouldn't trust Disk Manager on the assigment of the driver
letter.Try what I mention in the article to see if this solves the problem.

Is this the fist time you are booting an XPe image on the system? Are you
using EWF?

Sean, it took a couple of reads of your article, but now I understand what
you were referring to. I didn't have the right drive letter assigned in TD.
Once I changed the drive letter in the TD settings, the XPE image
successfully booted (finally!). Many thanks for your help.

Good deal! Dual booting is not my favorite subject or method. Too many
problems. Virtual PC is a better way to test XPe iamges since you don't ahve
to worry about the ARC path and driver leters
