Can any one give me some info on Firewire, I have just
put a Fire wire Card in my Computer Because I was under
ther impression it was Faster than USB 2 but for some
unknown reason it seams to send at the same rate as my
USB 2 does eg I do a Backup of my Computer every week I
used to do it using USB2 I put the new fire wire Card in
hoping to get a Faster Speed for Backing Up but it seems
to be about the same Speed as USB2 but on my Laptop My
Firewire Card is almost 3 times Faster than the USB 2 can
somebody help with this , are there different types of
Firewire Card,s thank,s Steven Jones

What device are you backing up to. It sounds like you might have reached the
maximum speed of the backup device. Does this make sense to you. Whatever
device you are backing up to is running as fast as it can backing up the
data so it doesn't matter how fast the usb2 or firewire cards are running,
the backup device cannot accept data any faster. Check the speed of the
backup device to see what it can accept.

USB 2.0 has a maximum rate of 480 Mega bits a second but has
an average rate some what lower. Firewire [IEEE 1394]
has a maximum rate of 400 Mbs but it is often more efficient
at some tasks. A new version of IEEE 1394 runs at 800 Mbs.

Firewire has advantages when working with camcorders and
iPods, otherwise the speed of USB 2.0 and Firewire is about
the same, as you have discovered.
