You check in Device Manager that you have IEEE 1394 host controller
and IEEE 1394 card, and that they are functioning.
If you do have , then PCI firewire cards are always six pin
Example -Your DV cam will only be 4 pin
The extra two pins on the card are power, so a cam needs to be
connected to it's power supply.
But if connecting an external HD via firewire then it will be six pin
and powered by the PCI card.
Though, from your post I fear you maybe out of your depth.

you're probably right about out of my depth..but i've got 2 degrees for god's
sake...life shouldn't be this complex!!!!. I checked my device manager,
nothing about IEEE1934 so i'm assuming there's no fire wire card. The dv cam
is 4pin so i need a 4 pin one end and 6 pin the other end fire wire and a
fire wire card...am i right???

If you do not have a firewire card, yes you need to install one. There are
PCI cards that provide both firewire and USB 2 ports. If you do not have
many firewire devices, you may want to consider such a PCI card to provide
more USB ports.

Firewire cables are common at stores like Staples, Circuit City etc.
Several choices are available. You can:
Purchase a 4-pin to 6 Pin cable
Purchase a 4-Pin to 6 Pin adaptor
Universal cables that come with 4 and 6 pin connectors that you can
interchange.
Other configurations.

Can tell you're probably quite intelligent. Most are dyslexic in some
manner. IE - 1934 vs 1394.

Stay away from firewire connector adapters, can cause problems. Max length
of cable is around 6 feet.

Yes, basically you are right, but..............
You require that your MoBo has a free PCI slot.
This link is to a full pictorial guide to installing your
IEEE 1394/ Firewire/iLink PCI card

And if you've got two degrees, then I'm a tap-dancing
Martian and I own Europe.
Have Fun.

Just a footnote, but it is very unusal for any modern PC not to
be supplied with a preinstalled Firewire card?
Apart from it being a valuable and essential piece of hardware,
PC OEM's like to slap down the overpriced/under resourced/
poor software/ feeble Apple offerings - it was Apple that first
used firewire, but it is Windows PC's that have the best and
varied selection of clever video editing software.
Your DV cam will do all the encoding and "dump" a pure and
delightfully clean DV-AVI to your HD via firewire, but editing
Video footage is a Processor and RAM intensive task, and
you will require a PC that has an efficient FSB, so.............
I expect to see you over in:
microsoft.public.windowsxp.moviemaker

PS. I now have two degrees too!
Also a couple of PHD's and a first class honours from Oxford Uni,
and a Doctorate in thigh-slapping.
It was easy, I just downloaded them from the web!
