File with No Extension

I recently downloaded a file that has no file extension. I tried many extensions such as exe, zip, rar, jpeg etc. without any luck. Is there a way or a program that helps recognize what the extension of a file is supposed to be?

Can you tell us what the file was for?

Where did you get it?

I think it was a photoshop extension, but i have tried the photoshop extension as well (can't remember it now)

What was the file name? I take it it don't give you any clues?

Have you unticked the box 'Hide extensions for know file types' in the folder options? I know its simple but you gotta ask....

The file name had no meaning and yes i have anticked hide known extensions but in the properties dialog it says that it is a file that's all.
