file type are the same

The file type and icon are the same for all of the files, jpeg,dat,word,
excel.bmp and etc, on a windows xp pc.The type and icon are of an application
that was remove from the pc. File association does not solve the problem.

Why not remove the association in Explorer-Tools-Options-File Types
and add the correct ones?
