File sharing problems

I am no longer able to share files between PCs after I installed a Vonage
Motorola phone adaptor with built in router.

I have a network cable that runs from a DLink router (cable modem and other
PCs plug into that) into a switch (more PCs plug into that) thats in my room.
I had to plug the cable from the switch into the Motorola router and I am
running a cable from the Motorola router to the switch. With this setup, all
the PCs are able to connect to the net and everything works fine except for
file sharing. The Motorola router has an IP assign to it by the DLink router,
the PCs that plug into the switch have IP addresses assigned by the Motorola
router. The Motorola router PCs can't ping the DLink router PCs.

Is there any way I can get file sharing back or do I need to get a phone
adaptor with out a built in router?

Basically, the router blocks the traffics. You may try to setup the router as DMZ and let all traffics pass it.

Normally in this case, what you would do is use the DLink as the only router.
Use the Motorola as a second switch. Put everything on the same subnet.
# Don't connect the WAN on the Motorola to anything. Connect a LAN port on the
DLink to a LAN port on the Motorola.
# Disable the DHCP server on the Motorola.
# Change the LAN on the Motorola to any address on the DLink subnet but not in
use, and not part of the DHCP scope on the DLink.
# Make sure that the DHCP scope on the DLink is big enough to serve all of the
computers.

Do you mean that you don't have enough ports? Or the other computers don't
work?? Either way, there is the problem. Let's try and fix the problem now.

So please describe in more detail what happens if you don't use the WAN port on
the Motorola.

I don't have enough ports, I plug the switch into the WAN port on the
Motorola and thats how I can connect to the internet with my PCs. If I can't
share files with the Motorola acting as a router then I'll have to call
Vonage to replace my phone adaptor with one that doesn't have a built in

If you're out of ports, get another switch. It's never a bad idea to have extra
ports. If you get a different Vonage interface, you'll have to make sure that
it has enough ports. If you can get stuff working otherwise, don't bother with
Vonage - just go to Radio Shack or wherever, and get another switch.
