File Extension Association

Eric Howard

I have an MSI package I want to deploy via publishing to
users in Group Policy. The package will show up in the
Add / Remove Programs in the control panel and manually
install correctly. However I cannot get the package to
associate with any file extentions in the properties of
the software installation policy. When I click on the
properties of Software Installation in the policy and
click on the File Extentions tab there are no extentions
listed. How do I associate the application with
extentions? Is it a package property or something within
Active Directory?

An application has to have been authored with file extension information for the
information to show up in the Extension tab. This information primarily comes
from authoring of the Extension table in the .MSI file (the Orca.exe tool
provided in the Windows Installer SDK can be used to look at the contents of a
MSI package).

An application that always has file extension information is Microsoft Office.
When publishing Office, the File Extensions tab will have a number of file
extensions listed in the drop-down.

Hope this helps,
