Faxing in XP

I used to be able to fax successfully but have been unable to do so for a
year or so.

The windows fax programme would not install despite showing that it was
using 3.8mb of memory. The tick would not stick in the box then I came
accross the solution suggested by contibutor of running "esentutl /p
%windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb" and relaoding the fax programme.

All appeared OK, Tick sticks in box, fax monitor available etc. but still I
am unable to send faxes. All the right screens come up but when I press
finish it does not dial and the fax sits in the outbox. If I try restart the
cross clears for a second then reappears, no error messages that I can find.

Any ideas ??

Thanks

David

At first glance, it sounds like either the modem, itself, or the phone line.
Go to 'Control Panel|Phone and Modem Options|Modems|Properties|Diagnostics'
and click the "Query Modem" button. Does the modem respond? Another item
to try is to click the "Modem" tab on this properties sheet and uncheck the
"Wait for dialtone before dialing" checkbox and see if the modem wil then
dial.

Hal,

Thank you for your response.

I had tried your suggestions before I posted. Modem status OK. 'Wait for
dial tone' does' not seem to make a difference.

When I get an incoming call (Not Fax) I get a ring tone on the computer.

Well, you might try seeing if the modem will dial from HyperTerminal ( See
http://www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.asp); if it does, suspect the Fax
installation, if it doesn't, suspect the modem. Has this modem ever sent a
Fax? Is it listed in the HCL
(http://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/Default.aspx?m=x)? XP Fax is,
unfortunately, VERY picky about makes and models of modems.
