Fax not Working

W

wendy

I have been using my fax facility for a couple of years now, ( I am
using Windows XP) then all of a sudden when I click on 'Printers &
Faxes' icon in the Control Panel, the print icon is there, but the fax
one has disappeared.
I went into 'Add & Remove' programme, and went into the add
components, the tick had gone from the fax, so I put it back in, when
I went back in the tick had disappeared again. I put it back in and
also put a tick in the Management & Monitoring tools' I then got a
message saying 'Cannot copy files mripsap mi_' and mentions file
i386 missing.
If anybody can help me, I would appreciate.
I have been looking at the 'Fax to Email' programs you can buy, but
none of them are compatible with the Microsoft Works that I have
installed on my computer, to send attachments.
Thanks
Wendy

2. Why can't the XP Fax Installation Program find the Installation Files?

It sounds like you may have security data base corruption as documented
here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884018/EN-US/
You cannot add a Windows component in Windows XP

You can either:

1. Get the hotfix mentioned in the KB article and install it. Microsoft
usually waives any charges for support calls to get supported hotfixes
listed in Knowledge Base articles.

2. Try this procedure using the Esentutl.exe utility mentioned in the KB
article to recover from security database corruption:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00270202
HP and Compaq Notebook PCs: Unable to Install Windows XP Fax Software

I can report that the Esentutl utility has corrected the problem in a number
of cases, HOWEVER, note that Microsoft does NOT recommend that you use the
utility and would prefer you try the hotfix.
