Fax program will not install

K

Ken

I have tried to install the fax portion of XP several
times and it will not 'take'. It goes through the process
and does everything fine, but it just doesn't show up. It
continually leaves the "Fax" checkmark blank. I have
tried the wizard several times as well as directly from
the cd. Any suggestions?

Are you using an analog fax modem that is on the Windows XP HCL list? What
messages do you get during installation and in Event Viewer?

Ken

I am using a "Generic 56K HCF Data Fax Modem" and my
internet connection works fine. I did not get any error
messages when the program installed and each time I go to
install it, it goes through the download process with no
errors, but it always shows up as 'Empty" through
the "start, all programs, accessories, communications"
links.

So is that modem on the HCL list?
Have you looked at Event Viewer and your faxsetup.log?

I am having the same problem. I was successfully using
the fax service with this modem. When the fax started to
hang after some hardware problems, I removed it
using "add remove programs " applet and then tried to
reinstall it. The wizard claims to have completed
successfully, but the service is not installed. The event
viewer shows that the service was unable to initialize
the modem and the service is tagged for deletion in the
services app. The modem is working for Internet, it shows
no problems in device manager and I installed another fax
program which works. I think the problem could be solved
by manually removing the Microsoft fax service completely
from my machine, but I can not find any reference to this
procedure in the Microsoft Knowledge base. I have
reinstalled the modem. This doesn't solve the problem.

Where Do I find "event Viewer and the HPCL list? I read in
this Windows area about another user having the same
problem. In my case the program does not show up in the
Add Remove Programs, and the Fax checkmark is always
missing in the Windows Components area regardless of how
many times the program loads. I never get any error
messages when it installs. I have ordered WinFax Pro from
the Computer store so maybe that will override this
problem but it sure would be nice if the program that came
with the cd did work.

I'm not following.
What is missing in Windows Components?
Fax Services, or just the checkbox?
How did you install Windows XP?

For help with the HCL list, take a look at this MS KB article, it may help:

I guess I will pick up here, as I am having this exact problem and can't figure it out. I can't "remove" fax services because it's always unchecked even after installing it several times with no errors (but it's not really installed..) I checked the FaxSetup.log and its very long. Is there something in particular I should look for

The checkmark is always missing from the Fax Services
window - The fax Services is there but it never has a
check mark in it no matter how many times I install the
program. It never shows up in the Add/Remove Programs
window so I cannot remove what is not there. The CD does
it's install fine and it appears that the program is
loading fine - but it just never takes. Windows XP was
installed from the CD.

If the modem is on the Windows XP HCL list, send me the log and a complete
