FAX Problems

Hi,

We have a IVRS application which uses FAX API to send
selected document to a FAX Machine. We are using US
Robotic Corporate Modem to achieve this. There are two
problems in front of us..

1. The FAX service terminates automatically after few
days.I try to run the FAX service from control panel
manually , it will start fine but within few seconds when
I refresh the services console, the status will be blank
instead of "Started","Stopped", When we reboot the server
and start the application freshly It works fine for
another three to 4 days.

2. Some mischievous users are dialing a residential phone
number instead of FAX number as Input over IVRS. so the
Modem is dialing to that number and the other person will
lift the phone and waits for response. some time they even
scold over phone, which I can hear clearly on modem. This
is a true harrasment . Is there any possiblity that the
FAX Service / Modem can check for FAX tone then only
process the call. Any other alternative solutions are also
appreciable.

Sincere Regards

Chip

Your first problem looks interesting and strange. This hasn't been reported
so far.

First problem - you may have to enable some extended logging for us to
investigate more about this problem. I'll find out if that logging is
possible and post you the instructions if you are ready to send logs to us
through our MVP Russ. Few questions that may help us better understand the
environment.
a. Please explain your setup in more detail - is this a shared fax
service that remote clients use to send faxes. How many faxes in general are
sent/received per day/week?
b. Do you suspect any other activity on the machine that can cause
this - like are some automatic system changes happening every 2/3 days like
installing updates etc?
c. Actually I didn't quite get how IVRS application is related to or
affecting this problem?

Second problem - Windows Fax Service doesn't have the capability of making a
call only after detecting a fax tone. I am not aware of any such thing
available in market. It may be possible to differentiate if an incoming call
is a voice call or fax call using some distinctive ringing support. But even
this is not supported by Windows Fax Service.
