Fax won't transmit

I have a new Acer desktop that came with Vista Home Premium, and Agere (now
LSI) PCI soft modem with the latest drivers. I tried sending a fax using
BVRP Classic Phone Tools as well as the fax software that comes with the
Brother MFC 420CN printer. There's a dial tone, it initializes, it dials,
but it doesn't transmit. I tested the fax number from a regular fax machine
and it's a good number and never busy. The modem diagnostics identifies the
modem and says "success". Any suggestions besides installing another modem?

I had the same problem with mine, turned out I had the phone lines going IN
and OUT backwards. Once I switch them going in and out of the machine it
worked fine.

Ah ! That could be why he's using a dial-up modem, presumably a fax
enabled one and presumably not with a dial-up Internet connection
running on the same telephone line.

I thought you might be using an old version of BVRP. Current version OK as
long as you also have MS Office (who knows why). Plug a phone into the line
and make sure there's no interference. Modern faxes are very sensitive. Make
sure the modem settings are Data Bits 8, Parity None and Stop Bits 1. Try
using pulse rather than tone dialing. also although speed automatically
lowers, select something below 14,400 just to be sure handshaking is working.
One final thought; modem should be on COM3.

I have the latest version 9.04 that I got free from USR site. You don't have
to have a USR modem, just select a v.92 fax modem. Many bloggers with Vista
and other modems say it works. It worked on my old XP computer even though I
was using an Intel modem. I'm on com3 and 8-none-1. I'll try pulse and lower
speed. Interesting that you say I need MS Office. I have the trial version.
Maybe I'll uninstall it and try my older version of Office. Thanks. Let me
know of any other tips if you think of any. I don't use the fax much and can
live without it but it just bothers me when something doesn't work the way
it's supposed to! Googling it didn't help.

Why not go for online faxing service instead. We have ours from RingCentral and it works fine. No long distance charges. Requirements are internet fax number and the online account you set with the provider and of course internet connected PC. Online fax works best with Microsoft fax wizard.
