Fax monitor: "An error occurred while sending the fax"

The Agere PCI Softmodem in my Compaq Presario SR1620NX keeps giving me this
error. The modem is listed on the HCL for Windows XP Home and is the factory
installed modem. Just to make sure, I downloaded and installed the driver
from HP's website.

The modem dials, handshake occurs, and it looks like the fax is
transmitting, but about a min later the error msg appears. I have tried
several fax numbers, they all produce the same error.

Troubleshooting instructions and diagnostics show all is OK. Help!

I've already reviewed search engine results and Microsoft's knowledgebase
before I posted here.

I'm looking for more specific information from someone who might actually
have experienced the problem and might've found a solution, not a list of
generic search engine links.

Here's what we know:

12. Why do my Fax transmissions fail so often?

You might try removing and re-installing Fax. If you have a WinXP SP2
system, it might look like its installing, but doesn't. Should that happen,
start here:

2. Why can't the XP Fax Installation Program find the Installation Files?

In this particular case, setup will have probably found everthing OK, but
didn't install them correctly. A common cause for this is security data
base corruption as documented here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884018/EN-US/
You cannot add a Windows component in Windows XP

You can either:

1. Get the hotfix mentioned in the KB article and install it. Microsoft
usually waives any charges for support calls to get supported hotfixes
listed in Knowledge Base articles.

2. Try this procedure using the Esentutl.exe utility mentioned in the KB
article to recover from security database corruption:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00270202
HP and Compaq Notebook PCs: Unable to Install Windows XP Fax Software

I can report that the Esentutl utility has corrected the problem in a number
of cases, HOWEVER, note that Microsoft does NOT recommend that you use the
utility and would prefer you try the hotfix.
