More Failed Faxes

Am also unable to send faxes..dial-up made, system says pages sent, then I
get "An error occurred while sending the fax" and fax remains in Outbox. My
modem is an Agere Systems PCI Soft Modem, which is on the Windows XP Hardware
Compatability List. Any suggestions on what to do?

Any clues for us?
Has this modem ever worked? Can you receive? Any messages in Event viewer?

After much experimentation, I’m beginning to think the problem is related to
faxing a word document. Today I was successful in receiving a fax and in
sending ONLY a fax cover sheet.
When I try to fax a word doc (scanned in, saved, directed to fax printer), I
access the Fax Wizard from my Start, work thru the Wizard to create a cover
page. Preview shows both pages. When I “Send Faxâ€, Fax monitor shows:
“Dialing; Sending page 1 of 1; An error occurred while sending this faxâ€.
Fax remains in outbox. Note, message says sending 1 of 1, not 1 of 2.
I tried another approach…sending from the open word window. Clicked
File/Send to Fax Recipeint. This opened a Fax Wizard DIFFERENT from the
previous one. It contained an option to pick the Fax Software. Microsoft
Fax option is grayed out. Only option is “A different fax program installed
on this systemâ€. Choice was FAX or my printer. I Chose FAX, entered
critical info, clicked Finish. A cover sheet was created in which a message
could be typed. Also, a pop-up box appeared (Fax Wizard/Send fax now). I
typed my message, clicked Send, & got a message “The Wizard has finished
sending your documentâ€. I clicked OK and got a NEW and DIFFERENT “Send Fax
Wizard†pop up box. I checked Fax Monitor, no fax in Outbox or Sent box. I
completed THAT wizard (had to create another cover sheet), checked the
preview (contained cover sheet AND word doc), clicked Finish to send fax.
Fax Monitor showed: “Dialing; Sending page 1 of 2; An error occurred while
sending the fax.â€
Hope this provides the detail you need. Thanks in advance for your help.

Why aren't you printing to the fax printer?
That's how you send a fax from Word.

That was the first thing I did. I directed the doc to the Fax printer THEN
started the Wizard. See previous for what happened next. What should I do
different?

That's not what you said you did. You said you first started the Fax Wizard
from the Start menu. That won't work because you can't attach a document to
those faxes. Only a cover page fax can be sent that way.
Then you said you used Send To > Fax Recipient from Word. That won't work
because the Word Developers failed to connect this utility to the XP Fax
program correctly.
What I said to do was use the Print command in Word. Then choose Fax as your
Printer.
