Failed software Raid 5 Array?

I have a Win 2K server box that utilizes 5, 40GB drives configured in a Raid
5 array. This is maintained by the NT software raid controller, part of Win
2K.

My problem is that a drive failed, so I have no access to my 150GB's of
files. This should be easy its Raid 5, I replaced the failed drive and
created a dynamic volumn formated for the proper size (37.27GB). I was going
to delete the missing disk so I could incorporate the new disk into the raid
array. When I try to delete the missing (failed) disk, Win 2K warns that I
will lose all data on the raid array.

The help file is less than clear on the proper way to repair this broken
array. It says to break the array, I thought that was what I was doing before
being warned about losing all data.

How do I add the new disk to my array and rebuild the Raid 5 without loss of
data? This newsgroup was very hard to find, I would appreciate any help being

I thank you all in advance for a simple or at least step by step explanation
of how to resolve this!

Delete the volume that you created on the new disk. It needs to be free
unallocated space. When you have this free space, you will get the option
"Repair Volume" in Disk Management.

What seems worrying is that you say that you have no access to your files.
With a RAID5, you should still have access, as long as only one of the
drives has failed.

Did you look in Disk Managemet Help? The steps are outlined in the document
"Repairing a dynamic RAID-5 volume".

Thank you Bjorn,

I actually figured this out late the same evening. I thought I posted a that
fact but apparentlly MS lost that one. Now that you mention it I suppose I
just assumed that I lost access to the files. I honestly dont recall trying
to look at them. I guess I just figured that if the array was corrupted by
the bad disk i would have to fix it first.

I'm almost embarresed to say that I'm an MCSE on 2K also. I guess
frustration was just getting the better of me. thanks agian, and take it easy.
