A query on raid arrays

I have a 750 SATA disk on which I hold all my photos and video. When that disk
is half full it will be a devil to backup. I therefore thought that I should
install another similar disk in a raid array. Well I sat down and read and
worked my way through it and eventually got there but not without some extra
unexpected work - that being saving what was on the original 750GB disk as I got
a message duing the installation that all data would be lost.

I wonder if I got it wrong at some time as I would have thought that the new
disk should have picked up what was already stored.

It is now done - I have the raid array working fine now - I just wonder if I
could have done it in a smarter way.

For your information, my stats are:
Win 2000, Pentium IV 3Ghz
1 Gb memory,ADSL via router DSL 504G
200+200 GB disks partitioned C:D:E;as 9.76GB 88.2GB,88.2GB
F: G: as 93.1,93.1 for data
750 sata raid array[2] for photo and video
320GB external USB2 for Acronis Images (backups)
