Fail to start, turn off and reinstall System Restore

*Fail to start System Restore wizard*
During System Restore, my computer failed to shut down, hence forcing me to
press the power off button to turn off the computer. After turning on the
computer, an error message appeared saying System Restore failed and asked me
to do it again. But when I tried to run System Restore again, an error
message came out saying System Restore cannot protect my computer and asked
me to restart my computer and run System Restore again. Same problem occured
after restarting the computer and run System Restore.

*Fail to turn off System Restore*
Then I tried to turn off the System Restore to turn it on later, but failed.
When I checked the turn off box and press ok, an error message appeared
saying error occured when system restore tried to start or stop some drives
and asked me to restart my machine and try again. Same thing happened after
restarting the computer.

*Reinstalling System Restore doesn't resolve the problem*
After reinstalling System Restore by running "rundll32.exe
advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf", I still cannot open the
System Restore wizard with the same error message as before saying System
Restore cannot protect my computer and asked me to restart my computer and
run System Restore again.

I'm quite desparate now. Please help. Thanks very much.

Hi Karvie in the past i have known unsigned drivers to cause system restore
problems. When you use system restore it needs to restart to apply changes,
if anything goes wrong during the restart, system restore is unable to
restore the machine. Ensure all of your drivers are signed using the system
information tool. If they are all signed you may have a virus infection that
has corrupted the system restore information. i would try to roll back to a
much later date, any change you make can be undone. This will verify system
restore works but wont clear the potential virus issue. Ensure you anti virus
is up to date and download some good anti spyware. There are numerous free
products available.

Thanks Joe for your advice. In the list of "Signed Driver", my WIFI adapter
showed "not signed", and a bunch of drivers showed "no information" under the
"Signed" column. Please advise how can I "sign" them? Will signing them make
the System Restore work again?

My computer is scanned for virus using Norton Anti-virus everyday and the
virus definition is up-to-date. As for firewall and anti-spyware, I use
Freedom Firewall and the built-in Windows firewall and Windows Defender,
which runs full scan everyday. Beside virus infection, what else could make
such a malfunction in System Restore and how can I resolve my problem?

Thanks a lot.

Hi Bert. Thanks for you help.

I have run System Restore in Safe Mode but that didn't solve the problem.
Then I followed the tips in http://bertk.mvps.org/index.html, and did the
following, but the problem wasn't solved either:

1. Windows Update completed
2. Virus and Spyware scanned with up-to-date definition
3. Event Viewer failed to load with error message saying unable to
initialize CLSID:ï½›975797FC-4E2A-11D0-B702-00C04FD8DBF7ï½
4. “Task Scheduler†is running but “System Restore Service†is not, but
unable to start the System Restore Service with error code: 1114 (DLL
initialization procedure failed)
5. Free Disk Space enough
6. Cannot adjust Disc Space Used by System Restore to below 12% (anywhere
along the bar except the maximum 12% cannot activate the Apply button)
7. Unable to start System Restore Wizard therefore cannot create a test
restore point
8. Unable to turn off System Restore with error message saying error occured
when system restore tried to start or stop some drives and asked me to
restart my machine and try again.
9. System Restore reinstalled

Should I do Repair Install? But I don't have the XP Home CD. My XP Home is
preinstalled with my notebook which is manufactured by NEC. Can I still do
Repair Install without the XP Home CD?

Your opinion will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Bert,

Thanks for your patience and helpfulness. I have gone through the System
Restore reinstallation process several times. I don't know if I have
successfully reinstalled System Restore since the Run window automatically
closed after asking me for locations of the sr.sys and srframe.mmf files and
there was no message showing I have reinstalled it. Then I tried to open the
System Restore wizard and the same error message came out.

I have done all the things I could mentioned in
http://bertk.mvps.org/index.html, except Repair Install. But I don't have the
XP Home CD to do so because my XP Home is preinstalled with my NEC notebook
and I only have the NEC recovery CD. What should I do next?

Hi,

Normally OEM CD create a i386 folder with the necessary files. Do a
search for this folder and point the reinstall to it. You can also try
pointing to the recovery disk.
