extra download

im running XP, when i try to download SP2 it starts initialising it and then
suddenly it will stop and say that an extra download is needed and the entire
thing is canceled.

i think this might have something to do with some problems im having with
these new explorer windows opening every few min for different things most of
the web addresses have 'media' something in them, ive tryed using adaware and
it just keeps coming back and ive got the XP system firewall up.
any help i would be greatfull for

Lora, your computer is full of malware. Do *not* attempt to install SP2
on an infested machine. I can tell you with almost 100% certainty that
it will fail and the results can be very ugly. Clean up your computer
first (steps follow) and then get the SP2 cd from either MS (it's free)
or many computer and Office Supply stores have it. I will give you
links to help you prepare for SP2 after the malware removal steps.

1) Scan in Safe Mode with current version (not earlier than 2003)
antivirus using updated definitions.

2) Remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-aware. These
programs are free, so use them both since they complement each other.
There is a new version of CWShredder from Intermute. I would not
install the other Intermute programs, however. Alternately, there are
CoolWebSearch malware removal steps at SilentRunners.

Be sure to update these programs before running, and it is a good idea
to do virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode. Make sure you are able to see
all hidden files and extensions (View tab in Folder Options).

HijackThis is an excellent tool to discover and disable hijackers, but
it requires expert skill. See below for HijackThis links. A combination
of HijackThis and About:Buster works well in removing the About:Blank
homepage hijacker. Again, this is an expert tool and novices should get
help with it.

3) If you are running Windows ME or XP, you should disable/enable System
Restore because malware will be in the Restore Points. With ME, you
must disable System Restore completely. With XP, you can delete all but
the most recent (presumably clean) System Restore point from the More
Options section of Disk Cleanup (Run>cleanmgr).

4) Make sure you've visited Windows Update and applied all security
patches. Do not install driver updates from Windows Update.

5) Run a firewall.

Hi

I suggest you use another computer to download the cleanup tools,
and then burn them to a CD or put them on a USB stick.

Please keep posts about one subject in one post. You've got posts
scattered all over the newsgroup and that makes it hard to help you. If
you can't download anything on your computer, then obviously you have
to get the spyware removal tools from a different computer, one that
has a working Internet connection and a cd burner. If you can't do
this, then take the computer to a good local computer repair shop (not
a BestBuy or CompUSA type of store) and have them fix it for you. Go do
something fun while they work.

Hi Malke,

Note that this post by lora is posted to the same thread "extra
download" as she has posted to before (she just added the response
to the original starting post instead of responding to any of the
other responses). It is not a new thread as the "Failed downloads"
thread was (that lora have apologized for).

(don't you just love the Web interface to the newsgroups ;-)

See, it shows up as a separate post in my newsreader. If it looks good
in the web interface, I wouldn't know because I've never used it. But
thanks, Torgeir.

Hi

It comes up threaded and fine in the Mozilla newsreader, so I would
think your KNode program have an issue here.

If you look at the headers of lora's post, you will see that is
refers to be a response to the original article that started the
thread:

(<[email protected]> being the
message ID of the original article)

Maybe it's time to switch to Pan. Of all the newsreaders I've used, I
loved Gravity the best. Unfortunately, it won't work here.
