External Maxtor Drive not recognized by Windows XP

I have seen similar questions posted but no result for my situation so
here goes.

I have a fairly new Maxtor OneTouch III Turbo Terabyte external
drive (raid) and a new Dell 690 Precision also raid.....on Windows XP. The
maxtor
was working fine and I was backing up data to it for a couple of months.
Then all of a sudden the computer did not recognize it.

I tried device manager, uninstalling & reinstalling driver, etc. I tried
other USB
cables....other USB ports and also the 1394 firewire cables (this unit can be
used with either USB or firewire). I went into disk management and it does
not even show up there. When I troubleshoot it I get error code 10 (device
could not be started). I ordered a replacement unit from maxtor (now
seagate).....this is an expensive drive at just under $1000.

The new unit has the same problem. So lightbulb goes off over my head and I
connect the original maxtor to another desktop that is on Windows 2000 and of
course it is now recognized. I check it in disk management and it is
partitioned NFTS so that's all set.

I tried plugging the replacment maxtor unit into my laptop which is also on
XP and again....not recognized. So this leads me to believe that there is
some problem with XP and external devices. My keyboard, monitors, mouse and
scanner are all conncected via USB and they work.

Disconnected the keyboard and mouse (with remote assistance from dell) as
well as the scanner to see if there was an overload preventing recognition of
external drive. No change.

Next step is to get a PCI card with usb ports attached and insert this into
a slot and see if that works. But to me, this sounds like an XP conflict.
Maxtor was no help. Their tech support people are in India and it is really
hard to understand what they are saying....plus they just have a standard
script. They do almost no troubleshooting and tell you to replace the unit.

Microsoft won't assist....they told me to go to the computer manufacturer
(Dell) since this is a new computer (installed in April).

I have been researching this for 2 weeks and the only solution I found that
people found success with was partitioning the disk in the disk management
area.....but if the external drive is not even showing up there.....then what?

Any microsoft people out there that can help me trouble shoot this and get
it fixed? I have a $1000 external drive paperweight on my desk now and a new
$5000 dell computer (very high end unit) also collecting dust here....because
I can't back up my data and such to the external drive.

I've got exactly the same problem (only I'm a bit luckier) with a
Kingston Datatraveler, that used to work on XP, but now doesn't , but
it's still fine on my 98 box, and my Yamaha digital piano.

When plugged in XP asks for a driver, but if I try to install a driver it
tells me to go away.

You've tried harder to solve it than I have (or perhaps you're just
cleverer!), but I don't think this sort of thing should happen, and there
is something amiss with XP and USB.

Of course I could get a new flah memory, but how am I to know if it will
work, and under present law you can't return memory devices if they don't
suit because of the Data Protection Acts. Its a bummer.

I hope you get an answer; it'll likely help me

Since you have a new Maxtor have you contacted them? I'm sure they would
take an interest, since you appear to have researched this thoroughly.
Or even contacted Dell, though you may have difficulty getting to a
knowledgable person, then they would likely tell you to contact Maxtor.
Incidentally tried it on anyone elses winxp sys?

Yes. I contacted Maxtor, Dell and tried Microsoft.....all to no avail. I
actually typed a longer response but it disappeared when I clicked "post".
The gist of my reply was that "tech support" for most companies is now
outsourced to India and in addition to being difficult to understand (heavy
accent and different use of our language/words) they really are not tech
support people...they basically are triage and just go down a play-book. If
your issue falls outside the playbook they tell you to replace the unit. As
for Dell..their standard answer when they can't figure out the problem is to
tell you to reformat your harddrive and reinstall the windows operating
system.

Ok, sorry that didn't help. We do regularly see issues with non recognition
of USB devices, and haven't come across any one solution that works. USB
does seem to be inconsistent. I have also seen more then one post where
Maxtor one touch devices have a problem.

Did you uninstall all USB controllers through device manager, and let widows
reinstall them?

The only other thing I suggest, and this is just a WAG, is to rename the the
Infcache.1 file in \Windows\Inf folder, reboot and try again. If that
doesn't work rename it to the original.

Junior, mike, rock,

I may be talking out of turn here, however, we have several XP machines in
our office that have the same kind of problem with USB drives. As it turns
out, certain drives and flash drives have a problem competing for a drive
letter assignment. Simply plugged in hot (plug and play) fails, sort of,
that is it appears to be connected underneath an existing but different
drive. Rebooting with the device plugged in and running normally sorts it
out for us.

A manual reassignment of drive letters may also work.

Just a suggestion. Please don't kill me.

Hi JH:

I did reboot the computer many times and still no recognition of the
external drive. It is not showing up anywhere....no in the drive letter
assignments and not in the disk management area. In the device manager there
is a yellow hazzard sign w/exclamation point.....that is basically just the
driver for the maxtor and since the computer is not seeing the maxtor drive,
the driver has the exclamation point.

It is a mystery because the drive was being recognized for about 2
months....then poof.....disappeared. But it does work and show up on a
windows 2000 machine.

Your post reads as if you have corrupted files.

First, try a SFC /SCANNOW.
Second, try a XP repair install.
Third, try a XP reinstall.

Make sure that you use the same
user names and passwords

I did an XP repair this afternoon and no change. System still does not see
the external maxtor anywhere at all.

{sigh}

This is a real puzzler as the Clack and Clack brothers would say.

Did the SFC and the XP repair. Also did a hotfix for USB from Microsoft. My
IT guru spent 3 hours troubleshooting this again today.....went through all
of the suggestions here and also the ones we found on the microsoft knowledge
base. Nothing is working. The maxtor can not be recognized at all. It must
be a conflict with this model of maxtor and XP because it does not work on my
laptop which is also on XP (both my desktop and laptop are on XP) where as
the maxtor works on an old windows 2000 machine we were replacing (ironically
with the new XP desktop).

We have tried everything. My IT guru says this is a first for her.....she's
never been stumped like this before.

There must be a solution to this. Otherwise wouldn't Maxtor have troubles
selling these external drives if they don't work on XP? Unfortunately,
Maxtor (Seagate) has been totally useless.
