Maxtor 3100 external personal hard drive, XP

My Dell Dimension 4600 (using XP) will not recognize the Maxtor hard drive
on any of 4 USB ports. All ports tested using 3 other devices that the sytem
recognizes and runs.

The Maxtor hard drive works on all other computers tried on.

Any suggestions as to how to make XP recognize the hard drive so I can use it?

Is it recognized under Control panel/administrative tools/computer
management/disc management...???
if it is it might need to be formatted in order for Windows EXplorer to see
it.

What do you mean it won't recognize it? Is it listed in Device Manager? In
Disk Management? In My Computer?

Good idea, tried it on a HP. Format successful. Then plugged it into the
Dell. Sys tem would still not recignize the Maxtor drive. HP recoginizes it
and call it a "local drive J".

Any other suggestions. That seemed like a good, simple one. Thnkas

The external Maxtor hard drive is not recognized by the Dell in any of the
areas you mentioned. Particularly, I would use Windows Explorer to find it
and use it.

I connected the Maxtor to a new HP, and formated it (a suggestion). This did
not help. There is no problem seeing on several other PCs I have conneted it
to using Windows Explorer.

Any other suggestions. Thanks

A drive needs to be recognized in all three places. I was trying to find
out some more info, as to where it was seen or not seen, which would give an
indication of where the problem might lie.

Yes I have you other suggestions as did Terry. Check out the link provided.
You might also want to talk with Maxtor tech support. I recollect seeing
several reports of problems not seeing their external drives.
