USB Maxtor not recognize

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 desk top with Windows XP Pro OS. I purchased a
100G Maxtor 3100 external hard drive. When the drive is plugged into A USB
port, the computer will not recognize it and says it is an unknown device.
Ther are 4 USB ports on the computer. Same message all ports. All por s
recognize and are usable for flash drive, digital camera, cd player, etc. The
Maxtor hard drive is recognized and works on several other computers.

Suggestions as to how to get the computer to recognize the Maxtor? Problem
in XP?
