I am having a really annoying problem with XP explorer, I
cannot close explorer with the close button. The only way
I can close it is to disconnect , or use the task manager
to close Explorer.
Explorer works ok but it is quite annoying , any tips
would be appreciated.

By "XP explorer", do you really mean "Internet Explorer"?
Is this XP Home or XP Pro?
What kind of Internet connection?
Cable? DSL? Dial-Up?
If Cable or DSL, is it Ethernet or USB?
When did this start happening?
Do you have an Anti Virus program installed?
Any Firewall programs installed?

I suggest you do this:

Control Panel | Internet Options | General tab

Delete all cookies
Delete all temporary internet files
(include all offline content)
Remove all Downloaded Program Files
To do that, you click on that "settings"
button and then click on the "View Objects"
button and then right click and choose remove
for all of them, if any, one at a time.
Some of them may not remove. Don't worry about that.
Close the Downloaded Program Files window,
Click OK to the Settings window.
Now clear History

Now click on the "Advanced" tab at the top
of Internet Options.
In the Browsing section, uncheck the box for
"Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)"
Click "Apply" and then "OK" at the bottom
of Internet Options
Close out of Control Panel

Rename C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts file to oldhosts

Restart the computer

Go to -

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7423,00.asp

Download, update and then scan with Ad-Aware 6.0 Build 181 to remove
any spywares from your system.

Restart

Update your own Anti Virus program and scan for viruses or scan
for viruses on line at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

I to had a similiar problem. If you are using XP Home Addition this will probably work for you also
1. Start Internet Explorer 6
2.Click on "Tools"; Internet Options
3. Click on the "Advanced" tab
4. Cursor down to the line saying "Java (Sun)
5. Uncheck the box saying "Use Java 2 v....
6. Restart Windows and try Internet Explorer, you should be able to close the program using the "X" box in the upper right corner of the window or any other way you normally close the Browser
Good Luck!
