Explorer.exe application error

Right after logging on to windows, I get this message:

Explorer.exe - Application Error
0xC0000095 (integer divide by zero) occurred in the
application at location 0x7830013F
Click OK to terminate the program.

If I click OK, explorer.exe terminates and I get an empty
desktop. I can run the Task Manager through the
CTRL+ALT+DEL menu and restart the computer, but I can't do
anything else. If I don't click OK and leave the message
lying around, I can run Regedit. I can also login using
Safe Mode with Command Prompt (Simple Safe Mode causes the
same explorer.exe error).

This problem appeared just after running a disk defrag and
rebooting.

I have already tried restoring explorer.exe from
c:\winnt\servicepackfiles\ but it didn't help. A chkdsk
didn't do any good either.

Any advice to help me through this mess?

TIA, John

Can you start a new task through the CTRL-ALT-DEL menu
and run explorer? Does this bail out aswell?

If this is a win2k machine, does the user have admin
rights over the machine?

If that works, it may also be the case that if you delete
the profile for the user (without it being admin) it may
work...
