Explorer can't read cd drive

I've had this problem since I install sp2 a year and half ago. I'm not
pointing fingers but I've been to this forum many times and it was never
solved.
At first it would happen sometimes, then more often, now all the time. When
I insert a cd or dvd into the drive, explorer doesn't recognize it, sometimes
other software will but not too often. With Nero it works everytime. In
fact to get around this problem, I fire-up Nero first then use explorer or
what ever software I wanted to use.
When I check device manager it always says it is working properly, obviously
it is not. About a year ago I have to change my dvd/cd drive but I never got
away from this problem.

I have same problem, why are Microsoft ignoring this? It's a disgrace! Do I
have to buy a new computer?

Microsoft is aware of this. The Beta version of Longhorn does not have
this problem nor the forthcoming replacement of XP - Vista which is due
for release in early 2007. If XP does not read your CD/DVD, simply reboot
your PC and Voila!

When you say reboot - what do I do - i'm good with programmes on computers
but not so good with operating systems, etc. I've forgotten how to do this.
Help! Thanks so much.

Reboot does nothing.

HELP! I have same problem. Windows Explorer "lost" the CD drive. I
downloaded the fix from Doug Knox and it worked temporarily but has since
stopped. Unable to use CD-ROM for data backup and storage I was ready to
toss my HP Laptop in trash. I tried everything to restore. No one can help.

I finally got so frustrated that I purchased an EXTERNAL DVD-CDROM burner
and plugged it into my USB port. I now have my former capabilities back but
it cost me a lot of time and money. I'm really frustrated and angry.

Will someone please explain 'Reboot' - if you mean switch off and restart the
computer this is a rubbish suggestion and does not work.
