why does windows exhibit strange behavior with a blank dvd

I have multiple problems on different computers with blank dvd's. At the
present time, my Compaq nc 6000 notebook will not recognize a blank dvd,
therefore, I am unable to ghost the C drive. (I was able to ghost the
desktop). This "unable to ghost due to lack of recognition" has happened in
the past with a completely different computer & burner. Also at this time,
after inserting a blank dvd, my desktop changes it's recognition of the drive
from dvd to cd (in an explorer view) & refuses to allow access to the drive (
with a right click to explore the drive). Nero has no problem identifing the
blank when asked to do so.(Nero is not configured to auto access any
operating functions) Neither machine will yield the correct pop up that asks
"what you want windows to do with the disc". How can I get the laptop to
recognize the blank so that I can burn? CD's have not been a problem with
any of the computers.

In order to "write" to most DVD blank disks (+R, -R, +RW or -RW) you
must be using some other DVD authoring tools. XP does not write
directly to these media. You need some type of software like Nero or
Roxio Easy Media Creator. If you want to use the DVD like a loarge
floppy disk, look at InCD or Drag to Disk.

He mentioned Ghost. I'll then assume he is using Norton Ghost to create an image and Ghost
supports DVD media. The question is... was the DVD media compatible with the DVD drive.
