I have no idea what iv done to cause this, but I can't get into any programs.
When I try, Adobe opens and says that the application isn't supported. I
can't even open control panal. Can anyone tell me how to get everything back
to normal?

Thanks!

Carolyn,

Can you go back in time using 'System Restore'? Start > Programs >
Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Try that first.

See if you can do a system restore either by starting in safe mode or if
that doesn't work from the command line.....

open "my computer" click tools | folder options | file types and look at
what the file extensions are set to open with and correct them. I can't
imagine how acrobat did that but anything is possible.

Have you tried to remove Adobe and see if that puts your system back to
normal?

mmac, Nothing in "file types" looks like it's set to open with Adobe, except
a few Adobe documents. Weird.

Carolyn,

click Start > Run > type in C:\WINDOWS\system32\appwiz.cpl > OK. Or just go
to the System32 folder and click the appwiz.cpl file.

Drew

I thought about that but I can't get into add and remove programs

Carolyn,

To bring up the System Restore window, go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore >
click the rstrui.exe file.

I can get as far as the rstrui.exe file but then it says that I don't have
the Authority to retore my system.
It promts for a password to log on as me but I have never set one.

Aparently I don't have sufficient privilege to restore my system! I can't
believe this!
That's the message I got when I tried to get into system information.

If having problems logging in as administrator to do a restore try booting
in safe mode....

"A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222

If that's not possible because of password problems try..

"How to log on to Windows XP if you forget your password or your password
expires"
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321305

or possibly the Emergency Boot CD on this page (but I've never used it)..

http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm#3

You may need access to another PC to download and make this CD but it says
it allow you to boot and then change user/admin passwords.

Once you can log in as administrator you should be able to do a system
restore back to before you got this problem.

PS: If you aren't running antivirus S/W (and/or you don't have the firewall
enabled) then best physically disconnect your PC from the internet before
you start the above and don't reconnect your PC until you do).
