Error when trying to send a message. Vista

gypsy1274

I've been able to send messages in the past, but not for the last few months.
I'm not sure what changed. This is the error message I received. I'm
running Vista.

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject
'Volunteer', Account: 'mail.purevariety.com', Server: 'mail.purevariety.com',
Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of
allowed rcpthosts (#5.7.1)', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 553,
Error Number: 0x800CCC79

The general rule for port 25 SMTP service is that the server must be
on the network belonging to your Internet service provider.
Since purevariety.com is not an ISP, you are violating that rule.

To send from home, you will have to substitute your home ISP's
SMTP server. If you need help with that, let us know who your
home ISP is.

My ISP is Time Warner Road Runner. Why was I able to do it before if that is
the rule? And if I substitute my home ISP will the message still say it is
from purevariety.com?

Mail providers are periodically tightening up their rules in order to
stay ahead of the ever increasing spam onslaught. So, a loophole
you took advantage of yesterday may not work today.

The *only* thing that needs to change is the name of the outgoing
(SMTP) mail server. Since your From address will stay the same,
your correspondents will not be aware of the change.

When you make that SMTP server change, try it first without having
"My server requires authentication" checked. If you get an error
message complaining about authentication, then check that option,
but you will also need to click the associated Settings button, then
select "Log on using" and enter the login information for your home
ISP.

I have RoadRunner from Time Warner. How do I find out what my ISP is? Or
login info if I need that? I haven't used that information since the network
was set up over a year ago.

Time Warner's RoadRunner division is your ISP.
The difficulty is that they use different mail servers depending on
what your geographic location is (unless you are a former Adelphia.net
customer). The scheme that is used is as follows:

If you live in New York City, for example, your assigned email address
will include nyc.rr.com. That "nyc" part replaces the [city] below.

The incoming (POP3) email server name:
pop-server.[city].rr.com

The outgoing (SMTP) email server name:
smtp-server.[city].rr.com

It works perfectly now. Thanks for all your help.
