Error Upgrading Pro from Home SP2

OK, I did everything right and installed all of the SP2 updates! Yeah!
However, I had a friend crash his computer and bought a new one with Pro on
it! So he gave me his version of Pro! So I tried to install it and I get to
resetting the computer and I get an error: STOP 0x00000024. I tried its
suggestions of disabling all of my antivirus (Uninstalled), Chkdsk, defragged
last week... I have a 6 mos old VAIO that does have a partitioned drive for
recovery. Any help would be appreciated. I think it just may not work
because of the versions. My VAIO came default with SP1 and Pro is original.

I take it you have Home on the VAIO. Did your friend give you a copy of XP
Pro that has on the cd "for installation on a new computer only"? If so,
then it cannot be used to upgrade any computer. It can only be used to
install Windows onto a blank hard drive. That is not what you want to do.

Now the real question. What is the status of your computer now? Is it
still running with SP2 or did the attempt to upgrade mess it up?

No it is a full retail version of XP Pro. But yes it is the original 3 years
ago. I did find how to slipstream SP2 and will try to do that prior to
re-trying. The computer is stable. But it does prompt upon start up XP HOME
or XP PRO INSTALL. I fixed it so it defaults to HOME and my wife can get on
the computer without too many issues! I reinstalled Firewall and updated
most of XP software again. I need to SP2 again! Tonight!

Use AutoStreamer from http://www.autopatcher.com/autostreamer.html. It
completely automates the process. It is excellent and free.
