Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no protection not provided by the regular
resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of Trend's
anti-virus seems to be causing problems too.

is sayin that
POP3, SMTP, and other e‑mail server types

When setting up an e‑mail account in Windows Mail, you'll be asked to select
the type of e‑mail server your account uses. Windows Mail supports the
following e‑mail server types. If you're not sure which type your account
uses, contact your e‑mail provider.

Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) servers hold incoming e‑mail messages until
you check your e‑mail, at which point they're transferred to your computer.
POP3 is the most common account type for personal e‑mail. Messages are
typically deleted from the server when you check your e‑mail.

Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) servers let you work with e‑mail
messages without downloading them to your computer first. You can preview,
delete, and organize messages directly on the e‑mail server, and copies are
stored on the server until you choose to delete them. IMAP is commonly used
for business e‑mail accounts.

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) servers handle the sending of your
e‑mail messages to the Internet. The SMTP server handles outgoing e‑mail, and
is used in conjunction with a POP3 or IMAP incoming e‑mail server.

Notes
Windows Mail also supports additional server types: Network News Transfer
Protocol (NNTP), which is used to read and post newsgroup messages, and
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), which is used to access
directory services.

Windows Mail does not support the HTTP:// protocol, which was used by
Outlook Express to access Hotmail and other web-based e-mail services. For
more information about accessing web-based e-mail, visit the Microsoft
website.

Not sure what the point was for posting that Help file.
If you have a problem, describe it in detail and post the error message.

I am having the same trouble. Can anyone help? I was online with tech
support for AT & T for 2 hours and that led me to no where. The error
message i am getting is as follows:

It looks like you are connecting to two bellsouth.net accounts from the
same machine, and the problem on the first one is locking up the connection
so the second one can't do much.

See if these instructions help:

<http://support.att.net/bellsouth/as...sprt_fid=0a41840c-0baf-4379-9f63-f578f49fee77>

Also, click on the Outbox and try to move all the messages there to the
Drafts
folder or delete them. If any of them refuse to do either, download and
install this hotfix with Windows Mail not running.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether you have a 32-bit version
of Vista or a 64-bit version, try the hotfix for the 32-bit version first.
Certain common antivirus prograns, such as most of those from
Norton or McAfee, tend to cause stuck messages and other problems
in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately, so if you have such a
program, remember where to find the hotfix and hope it will install
again if you need it again. A recent version of the Trend antivirus
program also causes problems in Windows Mail.

The Vista SP1 update includes this hotfix and more, but takes longer
to install.

The second error happens when a given account is checked
repeatedly with too short an interval between checks. I recommend
that you set the mail check interval for 5 minutes or more.

The first error is more difficult to assess, partly because you did not
include a sentence that normally precedes that error message.
It probably said something like the connection to the server was
lost or timed out. That can happen when using a non-compatible
antivirus program. Which one are you using? As a minimum, mail
scanning in the antivirus must be disabled.

I'm having similar problems, same error messages as above except I'm on sky (smpt.tools.sky.com) using port 465 for out going mail (as recommended by sky). What I can't understand is why my E-mail worked fine with the trial version of Outlook Express but not on Windows Mail. I have completely uninstalled my Norton anti-virus software and am using AVG. I have also tried some of the fix programmes with no success. It's driving me round the bennnnnnnnnd.

The uninstall of Norton often leaves a lot of troublesome debris behind,
which is why you are advised to follow up with their removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Secondly, if AVG is installed using the default install, its mail checking
module can cause problems. Uninstall AVG, then reinstall, choosing
custom install, which then allows you to deselect installation of the mail
scanning feature.

After you have done both of the above, delete that mail account, then
restart Windows Mail and recreate the account. If you still get an
error message, right-click on it, copy, then paste it into a reply here.

The reason you are getting that error is because you have a typo in the
outgoing (SMTP) server name. Change smpt.tools.sky.com to
smtp.tools.sky.com.

The smpt part of the host name is unlikely to be correct. Try changing
it to smtp instead.

If that doesn't work, see here:

http://www.sky.com/Assets/PDF/StaticFiles/720010.pdf

If you can't read .pdf files, download and install Adobe Reader:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Don't install the Google Toolbar program unless you want more
problems in Windows Mail. Web sites that let you do a Google
search are not a problem.

You may also need this:
