B

Good Morning,
A couple of days ago, I had an error message that I was able to fix.
However, the error pop up still comes up all of the time. Is there a way to
get rid of it? Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Bash

Good Morning Steve,
I'm sorry my post is inadequate! I will include the error message if that
will help.
You're server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes
includes server problems, network problem, long period of inactivity. Subject
'cheers',Acct:'mail.comcast.net',Server'SMTP.comcast.net'Protocol SMTP,Port
25, Secure(SSL) no error number 0x800cc0f. I could not send out emails. I
changed the port #, turned off email scanning and the problem seemed solved.
However, at this point the error message keeps popping up. I can send email
now. Is this a better question?

Thank you,
Bash

Thanks that helps, it looks like you may have the wrong port set for
outgoing mail?
Check all your settings compared to the following site:
http://www.comcast.net/help/faq/index.jsp?faq=EmailOutlook_Express17686
OE and WM have the same settings.

Bash, also ensure that you do not have two of the same comcast accounts set
up at tools>accounts, it is possible that one is set up correctly on port
587 and the other is trying to use port 25???

Steve,
I had checked my settings and changed the port to 587. That cleared up the
problem...but the error message remains. Am I making you crazy yet?

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of Trend's
anti-virus seems to be causing problems too.

Steve,
Pardon my ignorance...this is all kind of new to me. I have 1 main account
with 3 alias'. When you say more than one account, do you mean a main
account or do the alias' fit into that category? And if the alias' are a
problem, how would I check them?

Tools>accounts>select each account in turn>properties>advanced tab for Port
Numbers.

Steve,
The good news is that I followed your instructions...the bad news is all of
my accounts are set to the same post. Any other thoughts or should I just
settle in with the error message?

Frank,

It's probably better to say "McAfee and Norton have been know to cause
problems..." rather than blatant " McAfee and Norton are not compatible with
Windows Mail...". Comcast offers McAfee to every customer, of which I am
one, for free and there must be thousand out there that work just fine, like
the 20 or so that I overlook, and have been installed since Vista was first
offered. Taking the time to get the switches set in McAfee seems to be
enough, like unchecking the e-mail scans and let the file checking do its
job when you try to put the e-mail file away. And like any other program,
make sure it's up to date, including all the latest virus checks. If you
let your subscription lapse, you might as well delete it. Norton, I'm sure
has problems. Just my opinion.

Yes Frank,
I seem to have had some issues pertaining to my av. Pardon me but what is
EML? I have uninstalled Trend but there continue to be traces in my system
that I can't dispose of. I now have McAfee and will be uninstalling that and
replacing with another suggested av. Thank you for your assistance.

Wow...am I confused..Bob you are the 1st I have heard that feels McAfee is
ok. I take it your experience has been ok?

Copied from a message someone posted here recently:

Solved - more or less. Was checking Broadband Reports board and came across
a
similar thread. When I tried changing port to 587 yesterday, I neglected to
check the "My server requires authentication" box on the "servers" tab page.
Interesting reflection on the quality of Comcast support in that when they
directed me to change to the 587 port they neglected to inform me that the
box needed to be checked.

You might want to ask Comcast to make sure they inclide this information
here:

Note that these instructions call for more than just changing the port
number. Do this for each email account at Comcast, even if some
of them are alias accounts.

It's been more than ok, it's been perfect. And the only reason that I shut
off the mail check is for performance reasons and I also feel it's redundant
since the incoming mail gets checked once again when moved to a file store.

It would be even better to say that most versions of the Norton and McAfee
antivirus programs eventually cause assorted problems in Windows Mail,
although this often takes months. We don't plan to test all the versions to
make sure this applies to all of them. A recent version of the Trend
antivirus
program also causes assorted problems in Windows Mail, although we haven't
seen enough detail on these problems to know if they also often take months
to show up.

This takes a lot more typing for something we post several times a day,
though.

Another way to refer to the files with names ending in .eml that store the
mail messages in Windows Mail.

Guys,
This is all brilliant info but I am getting a rather bit confused. Robert,
are you suggesting that I go into all of my alias accts and not only change
to port # but change other things as well?

B

bathsheba

Bob,
I appreciate your input. Maybe I won't be in such a rush to uninstall it.
I am trying to work out other issues right now...it would be nice to have 1
less thing to f*&^ up!
