I am attempting to load XP on a new HDD.
Normally this is simple. Unfortunately this is on a Portege 3500 which had
neither an internal Floppy or CD-rom and has a problem recognizing most
external CD-roms.
If I attempt a straight install from the XP CD in a bootable CDrom it comes
up with
"missing system32\hal.dll. Setup cannot continue"
I now have used the 6 Bootdisks in a floppy. The CDrom is recognized and
goes to Format (this is FAT32) but on Setup it states
".SIF file missing or corrupted. Value 0on line in section(SourceDiskFiles)
with keySP1.cab. Setup cannot continue"
I have checked XP CD in another Laptop and there is nothing wrong with it.
I would be grateful for advice on this matter.
