Error Message during Windows Defender Scan

Hi,
After installing Windows Defender over AntiSpyware and then updating
definitions and running scan, we got the following message:

"Application Failed to Initialize; 0x800106ba. A ProblemCaused Windows
Defender Service to Stop. To Start the Service, Restart your Computer or
Search Help & Support on How to Start a Service Manually."

We tried restarting our computer but that didn't help. If we try to start
Windows Defender from Start, Programs, we keep getting this same message.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi again,
I was considering removing Windows Defender so I went to the Add or Remove
Program and clicked on Windows Defender.
I was then given the option to "Change" or "Remove". I selected "Change".
I then proceeded with the "Maintenance Wizard" and checked "Update Windows
Defender".

I then proceeded with the scan and this time it completed.
I tried starting Windows Defender using "Start", "Programs" and this seems
to work OK now.
I just wanted to update my Post information.

Thanks--glad to hear it. I believe the error message is referring to the
Windows Defender service--msmpeng.exe--which is a system service, running
from startup. The user interface--msascui.dll, which you can invoke from
start, all programs--communicates with this background service--which
provides real-time protection, and perhaps more.

Hi Bill,

I'm getting the same error message. I've tried to update throught the
maintenance wizard, I've tried to launch from the start button and I've also
tried to open the application from program files. I've never used windef
before and it gave me problems on the install. I've tried to install again.
Nothing seems to work. How do I manually start?

What version of Windows? Do you recall what kind of problems you had on the
install?

So--you've done the update install--and that appeared to go fine, but did
not help?

If you go to a command prompt and do:

net start windefend

and hit enter, what happens?

Thanks jslow,

Your suggestion about doing the CHANGE from Add/Remove worked for me as
well. I looked through all the posts and yours was the only one that worked.

Thanks man,

jslow,

Thanks for the info. I have read through multiple threads and yours is the
only one that works for this error.

Thanks again.

I'm not sure whether this error is a bug which has been fixed by code
released later than the thread you are replying to.

If, when you go to Help, About (arrow next to the help button)--the first
version number (Windows Defender Version) is 1.1.1051.0 (or anything less
that 1.1.1347.0 on an OS other than Vista)--you should go to
www.microsoft.com and do a new download--there's a link right there on the
home page.

Just run the download to update the code you have in place--one side effect
of this change will be that anyone with Advanced Spynet membership will be
reset to basic or less-as you choose during setup--visit Tools and change
that setting back to your desired one after the install completes.

I continue to get this error message. I have tried every single thing people
have suggested. I've uninstalled and re-installed, I went in through "run",
I tried changing it within the add/remove program, I can't even remember what
else I've done.

This message is driving me bonkers. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Soon after I wrote this I found I couldn't update, so I got some help and the
person who helped me told what to do. She figured out that I didn't have
Client for Microsoft Networks component installed.

Doing what I will soon copy and paste, fixed the problems I had with
updating, windows defender and McAfee Active Shield not initializing.

Here's what I was told to try (hopefully it will help others!!)

"At this time, let's make sure Client for Microsoft Networks component has
been installed on the system. Here are the detailed steps:

1. Click Start->Settings->Click Network and Dial-up Connections. A new
window titled "Network and Dial-up Connections" opens. In this window, open
the "Local Area Connection" item.

2. Click the "Properties" button one more time to reach the full General tab.

If Client for Microsoft Networks is unchecked, please put a check on it and
click OK. After that, restart the computer to check this issue.

If Client for Microsoft Networks is not installed (listed), please continue
with the following steps.

3. Click the "Install..." button to begin the process of installing this
component.

4. Select "Client" as the type of component from the list in the new window
that appears. Click the "Add..." button to continue.

5. Click Have Disk.

6. Type C:\WINNT\inf, and then click OK.

7. Choose "Client for Microsoft Networks" from the list of Network Clients
on the right side of the window. Click the "OK" button to continue.

8. Complete the installation by clicking the "OK" button to close the
window, then proceed to reboot the computer. After the computer has
restarted, Client for Microsoft Networks will be installed.

NOTE: You will probably also need to install the "TCP/IP protocol" and the
"File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" service to fully network a
Windows computer on a typical LAN."

That's interesting. I would not expect that component to be needed for
Windows Defender related issues. Perhaps TCP/IP, but not Client for
Microsoft Networks. I tend to wonder whether the process of installing
those pieces repaired some damage to the networking software components that
might have been caused by spyware or spyware removal in the past?
