I just installed defender and it tells me my definition file is 56 days old??
i updated from the Antispyware beta... when I click on check of updates the
defender icon on the taskabar displays a balloon message "Windows Defender
was unable to complete the update: 0x80070642. fatal error during
installation" ????

Please go to Windows Update, do an express scan, and apply all offered
updates. See whether that takes care of this issue.

To humor myself I applied all updates 3 for the OS and 3 for applications and
rebooted and i got the same thing...

Were updates for Defender among those offered?

Windows Defender updates via Windows Update or AutoUpdate--so if either of
these is functional, the app should be able to be updated. However--clearly
there are some issues...

Is the definition version shown as 1.0.0??

(That shows at the bottom of the home page of the app.)

There used to be a KB article addressing this precise error--it's been
withdrawn : (

I'm not sure how to proceed at this point--usually, if no updates have been
received, it is because the user hasn't gone to WindowsUpdate, and
autoupdate isn't functioning for any number of valid reasons.

Most update issues I see involve machines where the updates have begun to be
received, but one particular update has failed to install fully. The fix is
to get that one removed, so that further attempts complete.

In your case, I can't tell from what I know so far whether any updates have
ever succeeded.

I think I'd proceed based on the idea that the very first update has failed
to complete.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105

The first thing to try are the resolution steps from the above KB
article--don't worry about the premise--just use those steps.

Once they complete, please try updating via both of the possible
methods --in Windows Defender, Help, About, check for updates, or, Windows
Update.

If you get an error message in step1, the next thing to try is:

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;290301

The Windows Installer cleanup utility--download via a link in the above KB
article. Install it. Run it via Start, all programs. Scroll down the list
and find Windows Defender signatures--Remove this item. Then try updating
via both of the available methods.

I think one or more of the above steps has taken care of this issue for the
vast majority of folks who've had problems and posted here--who are, of
course, a very small minority of the actual users of the product--so I hope
you'll be able to give it a try, and that one of these methods fixes the
situation on your system.

OK so i checked the application event log and there was an event each time i
try and update defender

it's id 11327 source MsiInstaller and states:
Product: Windows Defender Signatures -- Error 1327.Invalid Drive: U:\

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I do have my documents and several other user folders on my network U:
drive... so i wonder what defender is trying to access?? and how could I
maybe change the registry to have defender config files be stored on my C:
drive i don't i am grasping here but I think I am on to something.. maybe you
can tell me what defender is looking for and where and I can make sure i have
write access i should have write access on every folder under my U: drive...

I ran the msi command and got an error "this action is only valid for
products that are currently installed"

i then loaded windows installer clean up and remove defender like you stated
and still no difference same error message

Did you look at my other posts regarding what I am seeing the app evt log?
why is it trying to go to my U: drive there is nothing there but my user
docs... and it's getting that 1327 event which looks like permissions but my
U: drive has full permissions..

also i went to remove windows defender and it is not listed under add/remove
programs anymore.. how do I remove it?? i tried just reinstalling and that
made no different... i don't want to get rid of it... I did prefer
Antispyware version as i never had problems with it :)

i wasn't seeing the defender update on the microsoft update site seems my
company was using an internal sus server I change my registry to use MS site
and now i saw the defender update.. I ran the file as_sigs.msi and then
loaded the defender udpate... my definition file is up to date now but i
still get that error message when I click help about and try and update...?

Windows Defender definitions are not available via SUS, only via WSUS, and
then only when the administrator has enabled them.

SUS won't receive updates after December of 2006--so I would expect that
your company is well on the way to migrating?

This one is not ringing any bells for me, I'm afraid--Check my other
reply--I think the basic issue is that you are locked down to a SUS server
that cannot carry Windows defender signatures.

1. why did antispyware beta not have this issue?

2. I changed the registry settings "WUServer" and "WUStatusServer" from my
companies internal server to Http://update.microsoft.com and the setting
remained on a reboot so their are not applying a GPO to change it back...

what else should i do here?

I'm not sure what happened--I think you may have misinterpreted my
instructions, and used the installer cleanup app to remove Windows Defender,
instead of Windows Defender Signatures.

That would account for it not showing in add or remove programs.

Can you try the Windows Installer Cleanup utility once more--and remove just
Windows Defender Signatures. See whether you can update at that
point--either via Help, About, Check for updates, or Windows Update--try
both.

If that fails, some users have reported success by uninstalling,
reinstalling, and rebooting.

I can understand your nostalgia for the old program--It also had its
updating foibles, but this one is a challenge, at times!

Ignore my other reply to the thread--I'd lost track of where we were with
this issue.

Beta1 didn't use WindowsUpdate and AutoUpdate. beta2 is re-written from
scratch to new and more rigorous standards--it meets Vista UI standards, is
designed from the start to be localized in the different languages Windows
supports, etc. The update mechanism was also changed--the intention is
that it be automatic for both home and corporate users. If your business
chooses to support the application, and carries the definitions on WSUS,
then it will be automatic.

I'm not sure of the answer to your #2--I don't have experience with the
registry changes needed to reverse such policies--and I really don't want to
advise you to do an end run around corporate policy. If you can reach
Windows Update, you can update manually.

Can you go back out to windows update and see if you see the Defender
Signatures offered there? Do they install from Windows Update ? If there are
other installation packages that need to be downloaded and installed, please
do that as well.

Ben,

Can you post or send me your c:\windows\windowsupdate.log? Also, can you
give me step by step repro to make this error occur?

thanks!
