Error code (Code 41)

Guest

Both my CDRW and DVDRW suddenly cannot be found by the system.
Have never had a problem with them for the last year. Rechecked all cable
connections and uninstalled and reinstalled with success loading device
drivers but still getting ERROR 41 " Windows successfully loaded the device
driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)"
Can anyone tell me what might be wrong and how to fix it. My hard drive is
connected to the same IDE cable as the DVDRW so I belive the cable and IDE
connections to the board are all ok because my hard drive works great.

Thanks in advance for any help.

This gets *very* tiresome, since it happens regularly for no apparent
reason - even on systems without a burner, which have therefore never
had any CD creation software installed, let alone removed.

You post the resolution on an almost daily basis, which leads me to
conclude the problem is widespread.

Does anyone know the root cause of the problem, and/or how to fix it
permanently?

The cause of the problem is a broken filter driver.

What can cause this... improper installation/uninstallation of the filter
driver, improper update of the filter driver, improper
registration/unregistration of the filter driver.

OK.

So what is the function of a 'filter driver' ?

Does XP include a filter driver? If so, why would CD burning
applications need to change it? What other types of applications might
change it?

I'd like to understand why optical drives frequently stop working, and
require registry edits to fix, especially on systems that don't have a
CD burner. I would have expected access to drives to be a service
provided by the operating system via an API, so don't understand why an
application would need to mess with the hardware drivers.

Perhaps David A. Karp will answer, in the next edition of Windows XP
Annoyances.
