device manager error code 41

MVP,

I have compaq pressario running XP home edition. Suddenly both of my CD
drives are no longer available. In the device manager it shows error code
41. "driver loaded but Windows cannot find the device." I tried to delete
both devices in the device manager and restart my computer. After the
restart both cd drives come back with yellow exclamation and error code 41
again. I also checked the IDE cable which connnects both drives to the
secondary IDE port on the motherboard. I disconnected and reconnected all but
this did not fix. Any ideas what is wrong?
I dont think both CD drives(ASUS CDRW and HP DVDRW) went bad at the same
time. Is this a bad
motherboard? IDE controller gone bad? Or is something else causing my CD
drives to stop working? They were working fine for 2 years, and I havent add
any new software they just stopped working.

Thanks,

Mark

weedfrog,
My first guesses are: 1) thermal problems -->>check the fans 2) power supply
going on the fritz-->>do you happen to have an old one laying around that
you can temporarily hook up?
