Error C00D1176 from WMP 10

I cannot burn to a CD because WMP tells me I do not have a CD drive or that I
do not have a disc in the drive. I have tried various discs but nothing
seems to convince Windows Media Player 10 that I have a drive and there is a
disc in it.
Anyone else having this problem? Is there a solution?

C00D1176: Cannot find a CD recorder
Windows Media Player cannot burn (copy) the files because either it cannot
find a CD burner (recorder), or Windows might not recognize it. Verify the
connection between your computer and the burner. If the burner is connected
properly, use the Add Hardware Wizard in Control Panel to install the
appropriate driver file, and then try burning the files again.
For more information about the Add Hardware Wizard, see Windows Help.
Next. Doubleclick the My Computer icon on desktop, then rightclick the CD-ROM
drive and click Properties. Click the Recording tab and tick "Enable CD
recording
on this Drive", click Apply and OK.

Thank you. I have verified the connection and it's reporting as "in proper
working order". I don't see a specific recording tab under CD-ROM
Properties, nor an "enable CD recording on this drive". However anything I
do see there seems to be marked appropriately. Except maybe the speed?
It's: read @ 40x and write @24x. Is this the norm?

When you rightclick your CD-Rom and click Properties, what tabs do you see?
You should see: General, AutoPlay, Hardware, Sharing and Recording. If you
do not have 5 tabs, than the CD drive is not properly installed, or it does
not
have the recording capability, it may be just a CD drive and not a burner.
Have you used this drive as a burner before?

I get 6 tabs: General, Auto Play, Hardware, Sharing, Settings, and Direct CD
5.0 Options.
I have used the drive to copy photos and to do back-ups.
I have Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 -- if that's of any help. It is re-writable.
Is that the same as a "burner"?
I hate feeling so helpless and I really appreciate your help. I honestly
don't know where else to turn.
Many thanks.
