Error 1516, improperly dismounted partition

I'm getting an error 1516, improperly dismounted
partition, in my XP pro system and can't access the C:
drive. Partition Magic 8.0 tells me to run chkdsk /f on
the partition. Trouble is, chkdsk won't run out of PM8 and
I haven't found a way of running a DOS command line while
being able to access the C: drive. None of the startup
functions in the XP CD seem to help. And I didn't make a
backup diskette because I was told it was unnecessary.

Can anyone help?

2 things you may try are push F8 upon boot up and choose the debugging
option, if that doesn't help, reboot and do F8 again, then try the restore
option. I believe it's restore to last known working windows (or something
to that effect).

Another option is to reboot and push F10. This is supposed to run a system
recovery, but I had to rename the My Documents folder prior to doing so and
I'm not entirely positive it'll help you, but if you're really strapped,
those are options.
