Improperly dismounted partition

I am trying to install Windows XP Home on a new 40 gig
Maxtor hard drive.

This is only the second time I have tried to
install/build a computer.

I have formated (numerous times) and written 0's to the
hard drive and started over.

PROBLEM:
After loading Windows XP, it says it loaded sucessfully.
Then when I try to reboot, the screen goes blank.

While checking for errors using partition magic, I get
the following codes:

#1516 Improperly dismounted partition
#501 Cross linked files found


Can anyone help?

Was the drive partitioned with Partition Magic before the install? If so,
use our partitioner and see if it works then.
