improperly dismounted. I can use PM's browser to see my files on the drive
but cannot access it.. does anyone know of a good easy to use partition
repair utility? PM say to run chkdsk /f but i cannot access the partition
to use it and chkdsk says i can't use it anyway and to run scandisk. Please

If you have your XP retail or oem cd, put it in and reboot. It will load up into
setup, but you only need to access the recovery console from the cd. It will ask
you for your administrator password, and once you've entered the correct one,
type fixmbr /? which should fix your problem.

Thanks for the fast reply. i tried your suggestion and the comp locked up.
i got this message at the bottom of the screen:

EXAMINING 156328MB DISK 0 AT ID0 ON BUS0 ON ATAPI

comp locked up solid. it has been doing this at the same point every time i
try to get to the recovery console. or try to re-install. thanks again

Sounds like a bad block on the first sector. You might need a serious
professional utility or shop to access the bad block and retrieve the info to
move it to the next sector so it can boot from the 2nd sector while the 1st
sector is marked as bad. I don't know of a utility that could fix it
non-destructively without wiping the rest of the drive in the process. Western
digital and Maxtor have an excellent low level format utility that might be able
to fix the bad 1st sector block, but you'd lose your data in the process. Just a
thought, is the drive cable firmly secure to the hard drive and mobo in the
case? And does the bios still see the hard drive attached to IDE0?

To repair the MBR Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk. Boot the XP
CD and, instead of Setup, take the immediate R for Repair. Assume any
password requested is blank, and TAB over. Give
FixMbr
and
Fixboot
which may or may not be needed, but takes only a moment while there.

Unless the structure of the disk is badly damaged, that should allow
you to follow with
CHKDSK /F C:

and then exit to see if it will now work
