Epson Printing Problem

I have a Epson Stylus CX4600. The problem is that I have used up most
of the color cartridges & it will not allow me to print just black &
white unless I purchase new color cartridges from them. I really think
this is a cheap shot on their part. I know I could have them refilled,
but is there any way around this? I am trying to print out my tax
return, so it is getting close to the deadline.

The design of the printhead requires ink to be in the cartridges. I do not
subscribe to the view that this is some sort of plan by Epson to keep selling
ink, they have a unique printhead design that many believe produces superior
results, the requirements of this design produce the "must have ink" byproduct.
There is no way I know of to avoid replacing the cartridges or filling them.
If you don't need colour then use the cheapest compatibles or ink, you may even
get away with just water but I have not seen that done. If you refill yourself
you will have to reset the chips on the cartridges using a chip resetter.

First of all give Art (Arther Entlich) a email requesting his cleaning
instruction which he will pass on to you free of charge, you'll have
to tell him the model and whats happening-:

e-printerhelp(@)mvps(.)org
remove the brackets leaving no spaces.....You'll find his keyboard
tappings up and down the pages here.

One common problem is the waste pipe coming adrift just under the
docking bay, when you switch on or do a cleaning cycle you should see
the ink 'gurgling through the clear plastic pipe, if you can't then it
may have come adrift and when this happens you'll get no cleaning
action and the ink will dry up on the nozzles and in the inkwell as
no ink is being drawn.

Another way is to get a pencil and spy this clear plastic pipe and
gently try to lift the end near the docking bay, if it offers any
resistance then it can be assumed to be attached...if it flops about
easily it has come off the end of the docking bay and you will get no
pump action.

But do see Art first..

Look back through this newsgroup and you will see that the Epson
C-series printers clog up all the time. Letting the ink run out and
dry in the printheads will probably break the printer within a week.
While it is annoying, you really should replace them, since the carts
are cheaper than buying an entire printer if the ink heads dry out.
You can find multi-packs that will bring the cost down even more (and
often come with photo paper).

Depends what your really after.. if you do use the colour on occasions,
just replace them, if ur willing to refill, do exactly that, you must still
reset the chips though.
If your after a purely black and white printer, just buy a chip resetter.
The colour nozzles will quickly become destroyed from having no ink, but if
B&W is all you are after that would not be a concern.
If you don't care about colour, but on odd occasions use it, even if you
feel you must use gen carts, why not refill the colours only, worst case
scenario (which is very unlikely) is clogged colour, which is garenteed if
you don't refill/replace them.

Have a think about it, theres no way to make it a optional B&W printer
because your colour has expired, so you do need to do something.

Epson printers use permanent ink heads which will clog if they run low
on ink and the remaining ink dries out, so they cannot leave the
cartridges empty.
