epson printer inf error

I had posted this in a different forum, however it seems better to place
it here.

I also tried this website to fix it, which I had seen Cari mention in
the only posting here that I found that mentioned the same exact here.
http://www.coribright.com/windows/Article One.htm
However the fix mentioned was for an error I didn't have so don't see
how its relevant. Besides it didn't work.

Here is what is happening.
I go through the steps to install the Epson C84 printer, it is detected
by XP properly. However the installation does not complete due to this
error message "An error occurred during the installation
of the device. The required section was not found in the INF".
According to Epson support this requires a registry entry that they are
not qualified to supply or help me get. Personally I don't know why it
requires a registry entry when the error message says its a problem in
the INF file.

Anyhow I tried Epson support website and downloaded the printer drivers
from them, but in attempting to run it directly it started trying to
install MSN Messenger 6.1. So instead of running it from the unzip, I
ran the setup file manually. I end up with the same problem though,
stuck because of an INF error.
I had a printer working before on this pc, a Lexmark, so I don't
understand why the Epson should need something special. I am at a loss.

Epson said I need someone else running XP with this model printer to
give me the registry key (export it), so that I can import it. Seems
rather hokey to me. Apparently its an issue they haven't had very
often, but have no direct fix for.

So I am hoping somewhere here has an answer for that error for me. I'm
afraid to try another printer, as it may just happen all over again.

I will mention that I have disabled a couple of the services in
administrative accounts if that helps. I don't think any of the
disabled ones would affect this operation, but may be helpful to know. I
have installed other things on this pc with no problem, included as
mentioned, a printer previously (Lexmark z11).

My pc's info is as follows:

ibuypower.com pc with AMD 2200+ cpu , 512mb memory, 80gb hd. I have
hooked up a Visioneer scanner also. I have the printer plugged into a
USB plug directly into the pc, not through a hub.
Incidentily I found on Visioneers site through Google, that this message
has appeared for people using their scanners. However the fix won't
matter here as I don't see the connection, and the files they mentioned
I don't have installed anyway.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I appreciate your response. It seemed like a reasonable course of
action. However as I'm sure you guessed by now it didn't work.

I followed the directions on that page perfectly. Attempted install and
ran into the same INF error. Then I noticed another page at that same
site that could help. It mentioned how to remove an inf that could
interefere with installing a printer. I did that and still no luck.

I try to manually add the driver, but that same error keeps coming up.
I had thought of trying a parallel cable, but I think that wouldn't make
any difference.

I am wondering if perhaps for some reason Epson just won't work on my
machine and I'm better off with a different brand. Since I had a
Lexmark before, simply get a new one of that. I'm just worried that
this same error is going to occur again, no matter the brand.

If you have another suggestion, I'll for trying it. It just bothers me
because I am pretty attentive to computers and how to keep them running
well and this error is bugging the hell out of me.

Thanks for your help.

.
Wayne, I am having the same problem. Interestingly
enough, I tried to install an HP printer and got the
message so after hours with their tech support I gave up
and bought the Epson. You got further with the Epson
support than I did. Epson told me to call Emachine and
when I did Emachine told me to call Epson back. Another
factor that we have in common is that I also had a
Lexmark before this.
The error message that I got from the Epson was this:
Cannot Install this Hardware: USB2.0 Mass Storage
An error occured suring the installation:
The driver installation file for this device is missing
a necessary entry. This may be because the INF was
written for Windows 95 or later. Contact your hardware
vendor.
To me this means that some INF files in Windows XP may
really be from Windows 95 and are too old. Is this how
you take it too? I know nothing about DOS and editing
registries but it seems like somebody out there at the
printer tech help should know but they don't. I have
spent about 30 hours working on this and have gotten
nowhere.
Please, if you find out a solution let me know and I
will do the same. I am going to my local library
tomorrow and hope to get some help from the computer
resource center tomorrow.
Thanks,

What I don't understand is if the INF files are old, how come not
everyone is having the same issues. Unless some OEM's aren't installing
the OS properly I suppose. Even so, the manufactuers should have a fix
available for this.
I haven't actually called the tech support for my pc, but I hate sitting
on the phone, plus having to explain this problem all over again.

Did you try the fix that Cari mentioned in this thread? It seemed like
a good idea, however it didn't make any difference for me.

Today I decided to buy another printer and see what happens with it. I
bought a lexmark figuring I had a lexmark before this should work. It
still isn't working lol. However its not even detecting the printer.
Xp is detecting it, but to install Lexmark you don't use XP's install
program. But lexmark's own isn't finding it! It can't be the USB
connector since XP can detect using it, and it was working with the
other lexmark.

This is driving me up a wall that this is so difficult. I think I'll
try a new usb cord with the lexmark anyway just in case, but have to go
get one. The Epson I've given up on for now, though still would like to
call my tech support and see if they have an answer, but not today.
This is the first time XP has given me such fits.

Btw I did a google for this error and I found a fix for a scanner with
that error but not a printer, but at least for the scanner Visioneer had
help for that error. Neither Epson or HP apparently think its something
they can help their customers with.

I will let you know if I find something that works.

Just fyi.
I tried another printer, different brand also, and the pc couldn't even
tell I had a printer. So I had to do what I really didn't want to do.
I reinstalled Windows. As of this moment I'm still getting things back
in shape, although not too far off from being done. Things are working
though with the printer.

So I believe your answer is there is something messed up on the pc that
only a reinstall can fix. It sucks, but that's the facts I believe.
