Epson Perfection 1670 for basic good machine or 2400??

Hi, I am looking at the Epson Perfection 1670 scanner. I am looking to
buy a solid reliable good machine used primarily for scanning text as
well as photos etc.. I noticed that the 1670 has been an editors
choice for one of the leading computer magazines on the Internet. How
is the 2400 Perfection? Is this bascially the same machine? Thanks!

They are two very different machines. The 1670 is a max 1600 DPI and the
2400 is max 2400 DPI. The 2400 is being (has been) replaced by the 3200
which is 3200 DPI.

The above is a link to the Epson USA Home page, Check the scanners on the
Epson web site.

If you're doing mainly text/OCR then it's fine. I bought one recently.
If you're scanning prints, then it's fine for that too and you don't
really want to scan above 1200dpi for those.

If you want to scan negs and transparencies, it's very debatable,
unless you're happy with small prints.

If you want it for the former, then buy the 1679, but *not* the Photo
version (why waste money on something you don't need).
